Hurawalhi Island Resort

About this hotel

General information

Hurawalhi Island Resort has the small coral island of Hurawalhi, in the north of Lhaviyani Atoll, entirely to itself: roughly 400 by 165 metres, some 6.5 hectares of white sand, palms and garden ringed by a lagoon and a house reef. It is an adults-only resort that welcomes guests from the age of 15. The 90 villas are split between the beach and the water, and the architecture is quietly tropical — clean lines, earthy tones, timber and other natural materials.

The island's best-known address is 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, the world's largest all-glass undersea restaurant, set 5.8 metres below the surface of the lagoon among coral and reef fish. The sea around it matters just as much: Lhaviyani Atoll has more than 50 dive sites, and the resort's own Marine Biology Center, run by a resident biologist, studies the local manta rays and introduces guests to them. Half board, full board and an All-Inclusive Plus plan with unlimited drinks are offered.

Location

Hurawalhi lies in the north of Lhaviyani Atoll and is the only resort on its island. The transfer from Velana International Airport in Malé is a 40-minute seaplane flight; seaplanes fly in daylight only, so a same-day connection works for international arrivals between roughly 6:00 and 15:00. While they wait for departure, guests are looked after in the resort's own lounge at the seaplane terminal.

Spa

Sulha Spa, part of the Duniye Spa group, fills a two-storey pavilion, and some of its treatment rooms stand directly over the water. Therapists pair Asian massage techniques with certified organic Healing Earth products: the menu covers therapeutic massage, skincare, freshly prepared body scrubs and rituals for couples. For a deeper reset, personal programmes combine yoga, meditation and traditional therapies.

Sports & leisure

The sea sets the pace on Hurawalhi, though there is plenty to do on land as well.

  • Diving with Prodivers, a PADI 5 Star centre: house-reef dives with tanks delivered to the entry points, daily boat trips to more than 50 sites across Lhaviyani Atoll, try dives and courses from beginner to advanced, nitrox, underwater scooters and rebreathers
  • Snorkelling: free equipment including a vest, regular introductory sessions on the house reef, half-day and full-day trips to turtles and sunken coral islands, and a manta ray course
  • Marine Biology Center, run with Prodivers and the Manta Trust: the resident biologist gives talks and joins guests on manta searches
  • Ocean Watersport: jet skis, water skiing, wakeboarding, flyboarding, parasailing, towed inflatables, windsurfing, kayaks, catamarans, stand-up paddleboards and pedalos; speedboat trips to dolphins and mantas, private charters
  • Excursions: the yacht Bella for a few hours or a full day, the Dream Island sandbank, sunset dolphin cruises, big-game and night fishing
  • A two-storey gym overlooking the atoll channel, personal training, yoga, meditation, aqua fitness and circuit training
  • Tennis and padel courts with coaching on request, five-a-side football on artificial turf, badminton, beach volleyball; a games room in Coco Bar with table tennis, billiards, pinball, air hockey and retro arcade games
  • Evenings bring live music, DJ sets, a bodu beru show of Maldivian drumming and dance, and talks on the country's history; the island also has a Pix Maldives photographer and a clinic with a resident doctor
Restaurants & bars

Some of the vegetables, fruit and herbs come from the resort's own greenhouse, and the venues could hardly be more different — from an undersea tasting dinner to gourmet burgers.

  • 5.8 Undersea Restaurant — a glass dining room with 10 tables, 5.8 metres down: a five-course tasting lunch in two sittings and a seven-course dinner, with a private Champagne breakfast on request; barefoot, and not part of any meal plan
  • Kashibo Restaurant and Bar — an over-water restaurant serving Asian street food from China, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, a teppanyaki grill, shochu cocktails and a sake list
  • Canneli Restaurant — the main restaurant, indoors and on a terrace: buffets with live cooking stations and themed evenings of world cuisines; the name is Dhivehi for yellowfin tuna
  • J.F.K. – Junk Food Kitchen — gourmet fast food inside Coco Bar: burgers, nachos, wings, dry-aged steaks and a long list of vegan dishes
  • Coco Bar — a beachside bar by the infinity pool with cocktails, wines, shisha and snacks, a DJ at night and live sport on a big screen
  • Champagne Pavilion — an over-water pavilion at the island's westernmost tip: Champagne and canapés at sunset, looking towards Dream Island, often with dolphins in view
  • A wine cellar of more than 1,000 bottles with a sommelier, round-the-clock in-villa dining, candlelit beach dinners, a weekly wine dinner and full-moon dinners
Swimming

The island is fringed by very white coral-sand beaches that slope gently into a warm lagoon; loungers and towels on the beach and by the pool are complimentary. Next to Coco Bar a freshwater infinity pool looks out to the ocean, and the house reef begins a few strokes from the shore, with marked entry points and zones where swimming is not allowed because of currents. Over-water villas have steps straight into the lagoon, and most villas have a private pool. Topless and nude sunbathing are not permitted in the Maldives.

The 90 villas come in five categories: 30 Ocean Pool Villas, 15 Romantic Ocean Villas and 15 Ocean Villas over the lagoon, and 21 Beach Sunset Pool Villas and 9 Beach Pool Villas on the beach. Interiors are contemporary and tropical, with wooden floors, pale fabrics and natural materials.
