Constance Moofushi Maldives

About this hotel

General information

Constance Moofushi Maldives occupies the small island of Moofushi in South Ari Atoll, on the seasonal migration route of manta rays and among lagoons and coral gardens that divers rank with the best anywhere. Part of the Mauritian group Constance Hotels & Resorts, it keeps to an easy, barefoot island style: sand-floored restaurants, bars right on the beach and no need for shoes.

The island has 110 villas — on the beach, at the water's edge and on stilts over the lagoon. Every stay is all-inclusive, covering meals, drinks and more than 125 wines from a cellar of over 12,000 bottles, with a wider list at a supplement. The real draw lies underwater: a house reef a few metres off the beach, 32 dive sites within half an hour of the island, and encounters with mantas, whale sharks and nurse sharks.

Location

Moofushi lies in South Ari Atoll, about 35 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport in Malé. A resort team meets guests at the airport and sees them to the seaplane, and a dedicated Constance lounge with drinks and snacks waits at the seaplane terminal. Seaplanes operate from 6 am to 5 pm, so for arrivals after 3.30 pm the resort helps arrange a night in Malé and the transfer the following day. The island keeps its own clock, one hour ahead of Malé.

Spa

Constance Spa stands on a wooden jetty over the ocean, with a shaded relaxation area looking out across the water. It has six single and two double treatment rooms, a yoga pavilion and a fitness room. The menu covers Constance signature massages, facials and body treatments based on Indian Ocean botanicals, couples' and honeymoon rituals and wellness programmes; each guest is given a card recording their preferences so treatments can be tailored. The spa is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm.

Sports & leisure

BlueTribe is a PADI dive centre that teaches complete beginners and trains instructors, and the theory part of a course can be done before arrival. Visibility is typically 20–25 metres with slow to moderate currents: shark channels and soft-coral pinnacles for experienced divers, shallow coral gardens for newcomers. Guests can also join the resort's coral-planting project on the reef.

  • complimentary: gym, a weekly programme of yoga and fitness sessions, beach volleyball, catamaran sailing, pedalos, windsurfing, kayaks, a guided snorkelling trip with gear, pool table, darts, giant chess, table football, marine biology talks, wine tastings and cocktail classes, and a show of boduberu, the Maldivian drum music
  • at extra cost: whale-shark snorkelling at the Maamigili channel at the southern tip of the atoll, twice-weekly snorkelling among nurse sharks, and manta-ray trips by dhoni from January to May
  • sunset dhoni cruises, dolphin watching, visits to the fishing village of Himandhoo, traditional sunset fishing, big-game fishing for sailfish, wahoo and marlin, and private boat hire
  • cooking classes, the Cinefushi open-air cinema, and breakfast, lunch or dinner on a private sandbank
For children

There is no kids' club on the island, but babysitting can be arranged and every restaurant offers dishes for children.

Restaurants & bars

The island has two restaurants and two bars, all part of the all-inclusive stay; the evening dress code is relaxed island chic.

  • Manta Restaurant — the main restaurant, sand-floored with an extension over the water: buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner with themes changing daily, from pizza to Maldivian dishes, cooked in front of guests; home to the wine cellar
  • Alizée Restaurant — à la carte dinners on the beach beneath the palms: grilled local fish and seafood, Wagyu beef, tuna and caviar
  • Manta Bar — the sand-floored main bar beside the restaurant, with signature cocktails and mocktails and a DJ for dancing after dinner
  • Totem Bar — on the sand behind the pool in the shade of native trees, decorated with driftwood: smoothies and iced teas, burgers, sandwiches and salads at lunch, afternoon tea, and sundowners as the light fades
Swimming

White-sand beaches circle the island, and the house reef begins a few metres from the shore, home to turtles, stingrays, lionfish and eels. There is a pool beside Totem Bar, and the water villas have direct access to the lagoon.
