About this hotel
General information
COMO Maalifushi is the only resort in Thaa Atoll, in the far south of the Maldives. The island is ringed by uninhabited islets, reefs that see few divers and consistent ocean swells, and the resort keeps an uninhabited island of its own, Lavadhoo, where guests can spend a night entirely alone. It is the largest of COMO’s private-island resorts in the Maldives and works as well for couples as for families travelling across generations.
Its 59 suites and villas sit on the beach among tropical gardens and out over the lagoon. The architecture is quiet and natural: high rafters, teak floors, New Zealand pine, woven palm-thatch roofs, floor-to-ceiling windows and generous decks. The resort is known for its overwater COMO Shambhala Retreat, the Play by COMO children’s programme, and surfing and diving on little-explored reefs. Rates include half-board and the all-inclusive Simply COMO option.
Location
The resort occupies Maalifushi island in Thaa Atoll, in the southern Maldives. Guests are met by the resort team at Velana International Airport in Malé, then fly about an hour by seaplane over the atolls, with use of a seaplane lounge before departure. A private seaplane can be arranged for groups of up to ten.
Spa
COMO Shambhala Retreat is one of the brand’s most substantial: eight overwater double treatment rooms, an open-air yoga pavilion, Finnish sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, plunge pool, relaxation lounge, gym and a boutique of COMO Shambhala products. Treatments cover massage, facials, body scrubs and holistic therapies using the brand’s own products, with daily yoga, meditation and fitness classes and personal training on request. Four-day cleanse programmes draw on COMO Shambhala Kitchen menus of cold-pressed juices, warm broths and herbal teas. The spa is open from 9am to 9pm.
Sports & leisure
Thaa Atoll is one of the least explored in the Maldives, and most activities lead out onto the water.
- Diving with PADI courses: only 33 sites in the atoll have been charted, with many channels and reefs still unexplored; turtles, reef sharks and manta rays. A freediving course suits beginners and certified divers
- Surfing with partner Tropicsurf: coaching for every level and speedboat trips to remote breaks in Thaa, Laamu and Dhaalu atolls
- Fishing: big-game trips for blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and sailfish, light-tackle and fly fishing on the inner-atoll drop-off within half an hour of the island, and traditional reef bottom fishing at sunset
- Snorkelling: guided reef swims with the marine biologist straight from the resort jetty, turtle and reef trips, night snorkelling with whale sharks, weekly marine biology talks and a coral-planting project
- Watersports: catamaran sailing, windsurfing, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (kayaks, boards and snorkel gear are complimentary), plus wakeboarding, waterskiing and tubing
- Boat trips: sunset dolphin cruises, a Champagne cruise on a traditional dhoni, a splash-net ride towed through the waves, and charters on the resort yacht Atoll Adventurer
- On land: a padel court, gym, daily yoga, bicycles, open-air cinema, castaway picnics on a sandbank and a night alone on the private island of Lavadhoo
For children
Play by COMO is a dedicated space for children from four years old, with games, art projects, curated toys and cinema nights, open daily from 9am to 6pm. Its programme includes island treasure hunts, Maldivian cooking classes for sweet and savoury treats, Junior Marine Biologist sessions with guided snorkelling and boduberu drumming. Outdoor playgrounds have slides, a football pitch, a play kitchen and a sandbox; there is also a games room for tweens and teens, children’s bicycles, a children’s menu, family yoga and gentle massages for kids, and babysitting on request.
Restaurants & bars
The resort’s restaurants and bar build their menus around local seafood, with COMO’s healthy cuisine available throughout.
- Madi — all-day beachside restaurant, named after the Dhivehi word for manta ray: Indian Ocean seafood, local fruit and vegetables, beach barbecues and dishes with Asian and Mediterranean accents, plus themed dinners three nights a week
- Tai — Japanese restaurant by the lagoon, named after the Japanese word for red snapper: sushi and sashimi from local fish at lunch and dinner, and cocktails at sunset
- Thila — open-air, sand-floored bar by the pool, serving the Madi menu, Maldivian afternoon tea and evening tapas with cocktails and live music, with a games room alongside
COMO Shambhala Kitchen focuses on plant-based dishes, some cooked fat-free in a tandoor, the Indian clay oven; it is served at Madi and in-villa. In-villa dining runs around the clock, and private meals can be laid on the villa deck, the beach or an uninhabited island, as can a breakfast served on a tray floating in the villa’s pool.
Swimming
Beach villas and suites open straight onto white sand, overwater villas have steps down into the lagoon, and every category has a private pool. A shared 14.6 × 6 m pool sits beside Thila bar. The calm lagoon and nearby reef make snorkelling possible directly from the villas.
