Cocoon Maldives

About this hotel

General information

Cocoon Maldives occupies the island of Ookolhufinolhu in Lhaviyani Atoll: a ribbon of white sand under dense tropical greenery, set in a broad turquoise lagoon. The island holds 150 villas and suites on the beach and over the water, three restaurants and two bars. Part of The Cocoon Collection and run on an all-inclusive basis, it is an easy, relaxed choice for couples and for families with children alike.

Italian design is the defining thread: the villas, restaurants and bars are furnished throughout by the furniture maker LAGO. Beds and tables appear to float on glass supports, headboards and suspended washbasins are cut from Wildwood oak more than two hundred years old, and six-metre hanging swings greet guests in the lobby. Manta rays, reef sharks and turtles live in the surrounding waters, and dolphins are often seen offshore. Island time runs an hour ahead of Malé, which gives each day an extra hour of light.

Location

Ookolhufinolhu lies in Lhaviyani Atoll, about 120 km from Malé. The seaplane from Velana International Airport takes 30 minutes; a resort representative meets guests in the arrivals hall, and they wait for the flight in The Cocoon Collection lounge at the seaplane terminal. The standard transfer is shared, and a private seaplane can be arranged on request. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so international flights should land in Malé by 15:30.

Spa

The Cube Spa draws its treatments from many corners of the world, for one guest or for couples. The menu covers the Cocoon Signature Therapy, Balinese, Thai, deep-tissue and aromatherapy massages, lava stone and pre-natal massage, the Indonesian Body Lulur scrub, facials (hydrating, lifting, pore purifying), jet-lag and men's rituals, plus manicure, pedicure and waxing.

Sports & leisure

The water sports and dive centre is run by Oceanico Maldives: beginners can learn to dive and earn a PADI certificate, while experienced divers head out to the atoll's best sites, home to manta rays, turtles, Napoleon wrasse and grey reef sharks.

  • on the water: guided snorkelling trips across the lagoon and to the reefs, jet skis, flyboarding and banana boat rides
  • boat trips: sunset dolphin cruises, picnics on a nearby island or a private sandbank, a local island visit, sunrise and sunset fishing, big-game fishing and an excursion to Hanifaru Bay
  • sport and movement: gym, beach volleyball and beach tennis, futsal, billiards, sunrise and sunset yoga, Pilates, Zumba and aqua fitness
  • evenings: live bands, DJs, boduberu Maldivian drumming shows, karaoke, cinema under the stars and sandbank parties
  • the IMStudio photo studio for shoots at the island's most striking spots
For children

The kids' club on the west side of the island welcomes children from the age of three free of charge, daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Indoors there is a play area with an interactive learning corner and a cinema room; outside, a large playground with a table-tennis table and a children's pool. The team runs scavenger and treasure hunts, a mini Olympics, pool parties and cooking classes, and babysitting is available for babies and toddlers. The spa also has a short treatment menu for children.

Restaurants & bars

Three restaurants and two bars cover the island, and for special evenings there are private dinners in scenic spots, sunset dinners at a table sunk into the sand and picnics on a sandbank. In-villa dining runs around the clock.

  • Octopus — the main restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as a buffet with live cooking stations and themed nights (Asian and sushi, Maldivian, Italian, Mediterranean, Indian, Moroccan)
  • Manta Restaurant — over the lagoon, à la carte at lunch and dinner, candlelit in the evening
  • Japanese Garden — Japanese cuisine and teppanyaki in a jungle setting with an ocean view, à la carte at lunch and dinner
  • Kurum-Bar — beside the island's best sunset spot, with fresh fish from the grill at lunchtime
  • Loabi Loabi Bar — the main pool bar, pouring Maldivian cocktails, with weekly DJ sets, live music, Latin and white parties and karaoke

Meals are on the All Inclusive or All Inclusive Extreme plan. The à la carte restaurants should be booked in advance, and the dress code is resort casual.

Swimming

A white-sand beach rings the island, and the calm turquoise lagoon around it is generally safe for swimming; in strong wind and rough seas the main pool beside Loabi Loabi Bar is the better option. Beach villas open straight onto the sand, several suites have a private pool, and the Lagoon Suite with Slide sends guests down a slide straight into the lagoon. The kids' club has its own children's pool.

Rooms

The 150 villas and suites stand on the beach and over the lagoon, all furnished by LAGO and fitted with wide windows framing the greenery and the ocean. The most secluded are the overwater pool suites, set furthest out in the lagoon.
