Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru

About this hotel

General information

Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru takes up the small, round island of Vabbinfaru in North Malé Atoll, ringed on every side by a living house reef that begins right off the beach. One of the country's earliest luxury resorts, it is built as a quiet island hideaway: 48 thatched villas set in gardens like the houses of a traditional Maldivian village, each with its own pool.

The resort is best known for its care of the ocean. It runs the first resort-based marine lab in the Maldives, where guests plant coral and clean the reef alongside marine biologists, and the island holds EarthCheck Gold certification. The other pillar is the Banyan Tree Spa, the first international spa in the country. Villas are dressed with Maldivian crafts, including hand-woven thundu kunaa mats, and stays are offered with breakfast or on half board. The whole island can also be reserved for private celebrations.

Location

Vabbinfaru lies in North Malé Atoll, 18 km from Velana International Airport in Malé, a 20–30-minute speedboat ride. The capital, Malé, with its mosques and markets, is close by, and among the nearby dive sites is the well-preserved Kuda Haa reef, about 45 minutes away by boat.

Spa

The Banyan Tree Spa is open daily from 11 am to 8 pm, and its therapists train for more than 600 hours at the Banyan Tree Spa & Wellbeing Academy in Phuket. Treatments draw on Asian healing traditions and the brand's eight pillars of wellbeing: the signature Royal Banyan blends Eastern and Western techniques with a warm herbal pouch steeped in sesame oil, Island Sensation pairs a deep-tissue massage with a vitamin-rich after-sun treatment, and the Master Therapist Experience is shaped entirely around the guest by the most senior therapists. A daily wellbeing calendar runs from sunrise yoga and breathwork to a barefoot grounding walk and Lagoon Floating Therapy, while Banyan Tree Connections offers private rituals for two. The Banyan Tree Gallery sells local crafts and the spa's own products.

Sports & leisure

The PADI Gold Palm Resort dive centre teaches courses from beginner to professional level. Dives cover the house reef, the Rannamaari wreck and more than 40 sites across the atoll, among them Lankan Manta Point, where mantas gather during the southwest monsoon, the Rasfari wall with its reef sharks and the Hulhangu Kandu channel, known for stingrays.

  • Marine lab: coral planting, reef clean-ups that remove coral-eating starfish, complimentary marine biology classes and guided snorkelling
  • Water sports centre: windsurfing, catamaran sailing, wakeboarding, water-skiing, canoes and kayaks, stand-up paddleboarding, jet skis
  • The Kahan’bu catamaran: snorkelling trips around the atoll, sunrise breakfast cruises, morning fishing, day and overnight cruises
  • Dolphin cruises, night snorkelling among bioluminescent plankton and night fishing with traditional Maldivian hand lines
  • Maldivian cooking classes, Bodu Beru drumming nights, a talk on Maldivian history and customs, and guided trips to Malé
  • A 24-hour gym with ocean views and a wellbeing studio
For children

Children aged eight and nine can try diving with the dive centre's Bubblemaker session: a first go with scuba gear in a shallow lagoon, using child-sized equipment under certified instructors.

Restaurants & bars

The island has three restaurants and two bars, linked by a dine-around arrangement; once a week the team wears traditional dress and the restaurants serve locally themed dinners.

  • Saffron — Thai cuisine, breakfast and dinner
  • Madi Hiyaa — Japanese cooking with Maldivian touches in an overwater bamboo pavilion, with a bar and a saltwater infinity pool; lunch and dinner
  • Sangu Garden — dishes built on local produce, with a grill, buffet and live cooking stations under bamboo and palm-leaf roofs
  • Naiboli Bar — beach bar with cocktails, snacks and light meals through the day, and Bodu Beru drumming on Fridays
  • Destination Dining — a private dinner for two under the open sky, facing the ocean
Swimming

White-sand beaches circle the island, and the house reef starts a few steps from the shore: from the beach it is a swim across the lagoon to the coral garden on the outer reef. Every villa has its own pool and jet pool, and the shared saltwater infinity pool at the overwater Madi Hiyaa is open from 8 am to 6 pm.
