About this hotel
General information
Mandrare River Camp is a small safari camp in the south of Madagascar, on the banks of the Mandrare River near Ifotaka. Its tents sit in the shade of old tamarind trees, surrounded by spiny forest — a dry country of baobabs and rare plants that gives way to a ribbon of gallery forest along the river. With only a handful of tents, the camp stays quiet and spacious, and days are shaped by guided walks and evenings by the water.
Stays are fully inclusive, and every outing with the local guides is tailored to each guest’s interests and pace. More than 22,000 hectares of spiny and gallery forest around the camp are protected. Lighting and hot water run around the clock on solar power, while Wi-Fi is limited to the main lounge and a station near the office.
Location
The camp lies in the Mandrare Valley in the south of Madagascar, close to Ifotaka. For part of the season, scheduled charter flights from Antananarivo land at the Ifotaka airstrip, about five minutes from camp; the alternative is a flight from Antananarivo to Tôlanaro Airport followed by a private road transfer of around 3.5 hours.
Sports & leisure
All activities are led by local guides and shaped around each guest:
- walks through the Ifotaka forest and the gallery forest by the river — baobabs, rare plants, ring-tailed lemurs, Verreaux’s sifakas, sportive lemurs, mouse lemurs, reptiles and birds;
- torchlit night walks for chameleons, geckos and the smaller lemurs;
- boat trips on the Mandrare River, at their best when the river runs high;
- a full-day excursion to Lake Anony — saltwater lakes, sand dunes, the Indian Ocean shore, greater flamingos and other waterbirds;
- sundowners among the baobabs or on the riverbank at camp.
Restaurants & bars
The main camp pairs an open-air lounge and bar, made for a drink after a day outdoors, with a restaurant serving freshly prepared meals in a relaxed setting. At sunset, drinks and snacks are taken down to the banks of the Mandrare or out into the baobab forest.
Swimming
The main camp has a swimming pool, with towels provided.
