About this hotel
General information
Park Hotel Sonnenhof is a family-run boutique hotel of 29 rooms and suites on the hillside above Vaduz, where the town gives way to the castle forest. Its terraces look across the Rhine valley to the peaks of the Swiss Alps, and many rooms face Vaduz Castle. The hotel is a member of Relais & Châteaux.
The house is small, personal and thoughtfully put together, and every room is non-smoking. A landscaped private park surrounds it, with the Eagle’s Nest terrace up among the treetops, a gazebo at its centre and a herb and spice garden for the kitchen. Stays revolve around Restaurant Marée, the oriental-style spa with its spring-water pool, and walking trails that start at the door. Heating and cooling come from a heat-pump system powered by solar panels on the roof.
Location
The hotel sits on the slope above Vaduz at the edge of the castle forest, looking over the Rhine valley to the Swiss Alps. Zurich airport is the nearest international gateway: trains run from there to Sargans or Buchs in about 1.5 hours, with a bus or taxi for the last stretch to Vaduz; St. Gallen–Altenrhein airport is around 40 minutes away. The hotel arranges transfers from Zurich airport on request. Guests receive a pass for all public buses in Liechtenstein, valid from the day of arrival and covering the ride from the stations at Sargans, Buchs and Feldkirch. Free parking with two charging points for electric cars is right in front of the entrance.
Spa
The wellness area has an oriental feel: an indoor pool filled with mountain spring water, a Finnish sauna under a starry-sky ceiling, an infrared cabin and relaxation loungers, open daily from 7:00 to 21:00. Massages draw on oriental aromas — neck and back, full body, hot stone, deep tissue, foot reflexology, a long Indian oil massage and an Indian head massage — alongside beauty rituals and individual massages by arrangement, booked at reception. Bathrobes, slippers and wellness teas or fresh oranges are provided throughout the stay.
Sports & leisure
Most of what there is to do happens outdoors, in the mountains and the Rhine valley:
- more than 75 km of hiking paths, fixed-rope routes and walking trails around the hotel, from forest strolls to nearby summits, plus herb walks
- a 75 km trail linking every municipality in Liechtenstein, walked in stages of your choice; the hotel drives guests to the start and collects them at the end
- individual hiking and snowshoe tours with a local guide, from a beginners’ introduction to a full-moon snowshoe walk
- routes for road bikes, e-bikes and mountain bikes through vineyards, nature reserves and old villages, from Lake Constance up to around 2,000 m, including a demanding climb from Steg to an alpine hut; bike guides can be booked
- golf courses within reach on both sides of the border, in Switzerland and Austria
- wine tours of the region on pre-registration
- winter walks on paths that begin right in front of the hotel
Restaurants & bars
Restaurant Marée is the centre of the house. Everything is made in-house from fresh, largely regional produce, from Sonnenhof classics to seasonal signature dishes, with vegetarian and vegan choices. Lunch and an à la carte menu are served by day and the Marée menu in the evening, and mornings begin with a regional breakfast buffet. Cheese comes from a farm in Ruggell, honey from bees in the neighbourhood and herbs and spices from the hotel’s own garden; fish is sourced only from selected aquaculture or certified wild catch. On the Eagle’s Nest terrace beneath the trees and in the lounge areas around it, guests take an aperitif before dinner, an espresso by day or a late cocktail. The sommelier pours wines from the surrounding Rhine-valley wine regions, Pinot Noir above all.
Swimming
The indoor pool in the spa is filled with mountain spring water warmed to 28–31 °C and is open daily from 7:00 to 21:00.
Skiing
Malbun, Liechtenstein’s ski area, is 15 minutes from the hotel: at 1,600 m it suits families and strong skiers alike, with ski touring too. Near Steg, also 15 minutes away, a 12 km groomed cross-country track at 1,300 m is open by day and in the evening, and two natural toboggan runs of about 1 km each lie in the Malbun area. Larger resorts in Switzerland and Austria are between 20 minutes and 1¼ hours away, which makes the hotel an easy base for skiing a different area each day.
Pets
Pets are welcome in the hotel except in the restaurant and the pool, and may join their owners on the Eagle’s Nest terrace. A dog set with a blanket, bowl and treat waits in the room; food is not included.
