Rosewood Luang Prabang

About this hotel

General information

Rosewood Luang Prabang lies hidden in the forested Nam Dong valley outside Luang Prabang. A natural waterfall runs through the estate on its way to the Nam Dong river, and the pavilions, villas and tents are scattered along the stream, the riverbank and a jungle hillside. Interiors marry Lao heritage with contemporary polish: antiques, local textiles and handmade saa paper, deep balconies and open-air bathtubs that blur the line between room and forest.

It is a small hotel of 23 keys: four rooms, four suites, nine villas and six hilltop tents. The approach is pared back by design, with naturally ventilated public spaces, no lifts and no televisions in the rooms. An estate garden supplies the kitchen and the bar, more than 80% of ingredients come from Lao farmers and producers, and the valley itself, with its waterfall, river and forest, sets an unhurried pace.

Location

The hotel sits in the Nam Dong valley, about 5 km from Luang Prabang’s UNESCO World Heritage old town and 10 km, around 24 minutes by car, from Luang Prabang International Airport; airport transfers are arranged by the hotel. Between 9 am and 9 pm guests are driven free of charge to anywhere in town on request, with a local phone provided for calling a pick-up, a tuk-tuk runs daily between the hotel and town, and bicycles are lent free of charge for rides into Luang Prabang.

Spa

Sense, A Rosewood Spa treats guests in single and double tents on the riverbank, to the sound of the forest. Treatments draw on Lao techniques and on plants from the spa’s own garden: the Lao Herbal Poultice massage with heated herbal compresses, traditional Lao massage combining deep-tissue work, pressure points and stretches, the bespoke Nuad Khong Khoi massage with local aromatic oils (citronella, eucalyptus or camphor tree) and a body wrap of ginger, plai and turmeric. The menu also lists moringa facials, a coconut body polish and hair treatments, and the spa receives guests from 10.30 am to 6.30 pm.

Sports & leisure

Yoga is held on an open-air platform above the Nam Dong river, and the concierge plans individual itineraries around the valley and the town. Among the hotel’s experiences:

  • time on the Mekong: a sunset cruise with Lao canapés and drinks, and a two-hour boat trip to the Pak Ou Caves
  • a trek through forested hills to Kuang Si Falls
  • half-day mountain-bike rides through hills and valleys, plus free bicycles and maps for exploring independently
  • architecture walks through Luang Prabang’s old town
  • a morning at Living Land rice farm, from ploughing and planting the flooded fields to tasting rice snacks
  • a Lao cooking class with the hotel’s chef
  • a workshop making saa paper from mulberry bark, and an introduction to Lao textiles at a local gallery
For children

Childcare can be arranged on request, and the concierge plans itineraries for families with children and teenagers.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchen builds on produce from local farmers and herbs from the estate garden.

  • The Great House — French and Lao cooking, with a dining room and an open-air terrace of daybeds overlooking the garden and waterfall; breakfast, all-day dining into the evening and afternoon tea
  • Elephant Bridge Bar — a bar set over the creek, pouring classic and signature cocktails with local herbs, spices and Lao spirits, daily from 4 pm to 11 pm
  • Private Waterfall Dinner — a candlelit dinner on the riverside platform beside the waterfall, nightly by advance reservation
Swimming

The oval pool lies at the heart of the estate, beside the natural waterfall behind The Great House. Sun loungers and tent-roofed cabanas with large daybeds surround it, Lao dishes and cocktails are served poolside, the water is kept at its natural temperature all year, and the pool is open daily from 7 am to 7 pm. The Waterfall Pool Villas each have a private plunge pool.
