About this hotel
General information
Amantaka occupies a historic garden estate in the old town of Luang Prabang, at the foot of Mount Phousi and a short stroll from the Mekong. Its terracotta-roofed buildings sit among lawns, mature trees and still water — a main pool, a dining pool and a reflecting pool — and the interiors are cool and restrained: high wooden ceilings, arched windows, antique tiled floors, rattan and four-poster beds.
It is an intimate place of 24 suites, four of the five suite types with a private pool. There is a spa with a traditional Lao bathing house, a library where afternoon tea is served, and an eight-hectare organic farm of rice paddies and vegetable gardens that supplies the kitchen. The temples, quiet lanes and riverbanks of the old town are within walking distance, and the resort’s own tuk-tuks cover the rest of town.
Location
Amantaka lies in the centre of Luang Prabang’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, beneath Mount Phousi and a short walk from the Mekong riverbank and the main street. Luang Prabang International Airport is about a 10-minute drive away; the resort arranges round-trip transfers, and a representative meets guests on arrival for fast-track immigration. Bicycles, the resort’s tuk-tuks and car transport around town are part of every stay.
Spa
Aman Spa has four treatment rooms, each with its own dressing area, Jacuzzi and relaxation room. There is also a traditional Lao bathing house, while the steam room, sauna and hot and cold plunge pools are open to all guests. The Signature Wellness Journeys pair a massage with a personalised bath of local herbs: Samun Pai adds herbal poultices, Anamai Hang Kai a body scrub and mineral wrap. The menu also offers oil-free Lao massage over loose clothing, combining stretches with pressure-point work, and the Aman Advanced Facial with Aman’s own skincare.
Sports & leisure
The gym and yoga studio both look over the central pool; Hatha yoga, sunrise movement classes, walking meditation and private sessions with a trainer are offered, and tennis courts are a short walk away. The resort’s bicycles make light work of town, while guided tours take in the temples, the Mount Phousi viewpoint and the National Museum. Private boats run up the Mekong to the Pak Ou Caves or to a riverside picnic spot, and on sunset cruises a bartender serves drinks and snacks.
Further afield, guests hike and swim at the tiered Kuang Si Falls, ride through the countryside on horseback with lessons at an equestrian school, try the loom, dye a silk scarf and make batik at the Ock Pop Tok textile studio, or join a local artist on sketching walks through the old town. Cooking classes begin at the morning market and continue in the open-air kitchen on the resort’s organic farm.
Restaurants & bars
Menus are built on seasonal produce from the resort’s organic farm, and the restaurants welcome non-residents when space allows:
- The Restaurant — Lao cooking with French influences for breakfast, lunch and dinner in a lofty room of antique tiles and rattan; a Lao set menu for sharing is also served here
- Pool Terrace — Lao and Western dishes at lunch and dinner beneath mature trees between the library and the main pool; a favourite spot for cocktails at dusk
- Lounge — a bar open by day and by night, known for its Makkam with tamarind and lemongrass and its basil-scented Laojito
- Library — afternoon tea with sweet and savoury bites
Private dinners can be set in a suite, by the pool, in a rice paddy or at the farmhouse overlooking fields and mountains, and some poolside dinners come with performances by Lao dancers.
Swimming
The main pool sits at the heart of the estate, shaded by mature trees with sun loungers alongside; there is also a dining pool and a reflecting pool. Four suite types have private pools of their own, and the spa adds hot and cold plunge pools.
Rooms
The 24 suites have high wooden ceilings, four-poster beds and private verandas, terraces or courtyards; four of the five types come with a private pool. Every stay includes breakfast, a daily three-course lunch or dinner with selected non-alcoholic drinks, afternoon tea, bicycles, tuk-tuks and car transport around town, the spa’s hydrotherapy areas and laundry (dry cleaning excluded).
