About this hotel
General information
The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp is a tented camp inside the Masai Mara National Reserve, raised among dense trees above the Sand River. Its twenty suites stand off the ground so that wildlife can pass freely beneath, and each has a private deck with a plunge pool and a dedicated butler. The architecture is worked into the woodland and the savanna rather than set against them.
The rate covers all meals with premium alcoholic and soft drinks, champagne breakfasts, wine pairings, two private game drives a day, binoculars, laundry, Wi-Fi and airstrip transfers. A particular feature is the Discovery Hub, home to a map room for tracing the migration, a photo studio with Canon cameras and resident photographers, and a teens’ club. The camp welcomes guests aged six and over.
Location
The camp lies in the southern part of the Masai Mara National Reserve, by the Sand River, where herds gather during the Great Migration, and just steps from the Kenya–Tanzania border stone that marks the meeting of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti. Light aircraft from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport take about an hour to the Keekorok and Mara Serena airstrips; at Keekorok the camp team meets guests and brings them in on an hour-long game drive. Airstrip transfers are included, and luggage is limited to 15 kg per person in soft bags.
Spa
Whispering Tree Spa builds its treatments around local traditions and ingredients such as acacia, shea butter, marula, aloe and neroli. It has single and double treatment rooms, a sauna, a steam room and separate lounges for men and women. Signature rituals include Welcome to the Wild Grounding Ritual with a mineral foot soak and scrub, The Whispering Tree Experience for couples with an exfoliation and hydrotherapy bath, the Maasai Awakening Spice Ritual with coffee, cinnamon and orange, and Soul Journey Through Africa, alongside Natural Glow Therapy facials, sound baths and twilight meditation on the spa deck.
Sports & leisure
Safari is the heart of the stay, led by guides certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association. Experiences include:
- two private game drives a day, at first light and in the evening, in open Land Cruisers fitted with Wi-Fi, charging points, a mini fridge, binoculars and field guides — the Big Five, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras and hippos, and from July to October wildebeest crossing the Mara River;
- photographic safaris with complimentary Canon cameras and guidance from the camp’s resident photographers in its photo studio;
- birdwatching in a reserve with more than 500 species;
- the map room, with historical maps and migration charts for planning drives with the guides;
- nature walks on the camp grounds;
- an optional sunrise hot-air balloon flight ending with a champagne breakfast in the bush;
- Maasai cultural encounters with storytelling, beadwork, music and dance, plus a welcome dance and fireside stories at camp in the evening;
- cooking classes and canvas painting;
- the Wellness Hub, with a gym, a studio for fitness classes and a trainer; yoga equipment can be brought to the suite on request.
For children
The Discovery Hub includes a teens’ club, and younger guests can join guided activities on request, such as fire lighting, beadwork and nature walks, as well as safaris for children aged six and over. Child-minding is available at the camp.
Restaurants & bars
Meals are included and move between the restaurant, the decks, the suites and the bush:
- Nest — the main restaurant, serving international cuisine at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with its own wine cellar, a restaurant deck and an elevated sky deck for wine-paired dinners under the stars;
- The Canopy — a bar lounge with views and fire-pit seating, serving signature cocktails, fine wines and light bites;
- the boma — an open-air enclosure for fireside dinners of nyama choma (fire-roasted meat), stews and ugali, with storytelling, Maasai songs and dance;
- tastings of rare vintages in the wine cellar, paired with cheeses and small plates by the sommelier;
- candlelit dinners on the deck of a guest’s own suite;
- champagne breakfasts beneath an acacia or by the Sand River, picnic lunches in the bush and sundowners after the evening drive.
