About this hotel
General information
Olare Mara Kempinski is a small camp of twelve tents at the heart of the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, the first private conservancy in the Masai Mara ecosystem. Like the other conservancies around the Mara, it is a joint venture between the Maasai who own the land and conservation partners. In Maa, Olare Motorogi means “the place of salted earth”: mineral-rich soils grow lush grass that draws large herds of grazers and the predators that follow them, and the conservancy holds one of the densest lion populations anywhere in the Mara.
The camp pairs the classic under-canvas safari with the warmth and colour of Maasai culture. The lounge and dining room are dressed in khaki canvas, timber and Maasai-inspired décor, a log fire is lit in the evenings, and tables are laid with crystal, silver and fine linen. Above the lounge is a small library with an antique telescope. Stays include full board, selected drinks from 11:00 to 23:00, a nightly sundowner on the savannah, two game drives a day and airstrip transfers. Children aged 8 and over are welcome.
Location
The camp lies in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, north of the Masai Mara National Reserve, within the wider Mara–Serengeti ecosystem. Some tents look over the hippo pools of the Ntiakitiak River, others across open savannah. Return transfers between the airstrip and the camp are included.
Spa
Spa treatments are given in the privacy of the guest’s own tent or on its veranda, daily from 9:00 to 19:00: classic body massage, deep-tissue massage and foot reflexology, along with body scrubs, blending modern and traditional techniques.
Sports & leisure
Two game drives a day cross the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, in the morning, afternoon, evening or at night as guests prefer. The custom-built vehicles seat six, with all-round viewing and radio contact, and carry drinks, binoculars and field guides. Lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and buffalo live here among more than 95 mammal species and around 550 bird species, and in season the Great Migration of wildebeest moves through. Other experiences include:
- night drives leaving at 19:00 with powerful spotlights, when lion and leopard are most active and aardvarks and bushbabies appear, with hot drinks and warm Maasai shuka wraps before setting off;
- guided nature walks in the early morning or late afternoon, with the distance and pace set by the group;
- half-day and full-day birding outings with a naturalist;
- hot-air balloon safaris over the savannah;
- horse riding;
- a visit to a nearby Maasai village to learn about daily life, step into a traditional home, hear songs and dances and browse the crafts market, with proceeds going to the community, including children’s education and water supply;
- a trip to the Maa Trust community centre on a ridge in the middle of the conservancy, about three hours including the game drive there and back, to meet Maasai women at their beadwork and buy the jewellery, bags and belts they make; the proceeds fund girls’ education, water tanks and solar power kits.
Restaurants & bars
The main dining room, in classic safari style, changes mood through the day, from morning light to candlelight at dinner, and serves international dishes à la carte. A timbered bridge leads from the lounge to a forest glade with an intimate tented bar, where a campfire is lit every night. On game drives lunch can be taken as a picnic, early mornings can begin with a breakfast hamper in the bush, and a private breakfast out on the plains with sparkling wine and a cooked breakfast prepared on the spot can be arranged; dinners are also served in the open.
