The Westin Rusutsu Resort

About this hotel

General information

The Westin Rusutsu Resort is a mountain hotel within Rusutsu Resort on Hokkaido, not far from Niseko, with ski-in, ski-out access from its own door. Its tower holds 210 rooms and suites, every one of them on two levels, from 76 m², with high ceilings and large windows looking onto the mountains or the golf course. Five restaurants and bars, hot-spring baths fed by a natural source and a small treatment room complete the picture.

Winter here revolves around the slopes of three linked mountains; in the warmer months the resort becomes a base for golf on four courses, rafting, cycling routes and hot-air balloon flights. The building has outdoor-gear shops and a convenience store stocked with local drinks and snacks, and a 110 m² room for meetings.

Location

The hotel stands in the village of Rusutsu in western Hokkaido, facing the Tower Course. New Chitose Airport is about 86 km away, roughly two hours by bus, and Sapporo is a similar journey. The BIG RUNS bus runs direct from the airport and the Rusutsu-go shuttle from Sapporo; both must be booked in advance. A monorail reaches the amusement park and the West Mountain lifts in about five minutes, and Lake Toya and Mount Yotei lie nearby.

Spa

Westin Rusutsu Hot Spring draws gentle water from a natural hot spring into a spacious indoor bathhouse and an open-air bath set against the changing seasonal scenery, with a dry sauna and a cold plunge pool; the women’s and men’s sides each have their own lounge, and no booking is needed. In winter the Aroma Treatment Averara room offers facial and body treatments with fragrant products, along with foot baths, by appointment.

Sports & leisure

The WestinWORKOUT Fitness Studio is open to guests around the clock, with Life Fitness cardio and strength equipment, free weights and yoga mats, and recovery and training kits can be borrowed on request. There are tennis courts and an 18-hole park golf course on site. The resort has four 18-hole golf courses – the Tower Course, reached straight from the hotel entrance, Izumikawa, River and Wood – with half-round twilight golf in the evening. In the warmer months guests go rafting, take guided mountain-bike tours or rent bicycles, ride horses and fly in hot-air balloons; a gondola climbs to the observation deck on the summit of West Mountain, where clear days bring views of Mount Yotei, Lake Toya and the Pacific, and early mornings can bring a sea of clouds over the valley. An amusement park with roller coasters lies close by, and winter adds snowmobiling and ice fishing.

For children

Children have their own Kids School within the resort’s ski and snowboard school, and the amusement park has Kids Land, an area for the youngest visitors.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens work with Hokkaido produce, including vegetables from the resort’s own farm and seafood from the nearby harbour:

  • Kazahana – Japanese cooking with seafood, Hokkaido wagyu and seasonal produce from local farms, served at breakfast and dinner in a room with large windows
  • Teppanyaki Kazahana – a ten-seat teppanyaki counter within Kazahana, with a course menu of Hokkaido ingredients cooked in front of guests; reservations only
  • Atrium – all-day dining in a bright, open room with panoramic views, with buffets at breakfast and dinner and à la carte dishes at lunch and dinner
  • Lobby Lounge Atrium – a lobby bar serving cocktails built on ingredients from Hokkaido producers
  • B Noodle Bar – an evening noodle bar where each bowl is made to order: ramen or udon from Hokkaido wheat, pho or potato noodles in miso, tonkotsu or dashi broth, plus pizza to take away

In-room dining draws on the hotel’s restaurant menus.

Swimming

The hotel has no pool of its own; guests use, free of charge, a heated indoor wave pool with a lifeguard, a lazy river and a water slide elsewhere in the resort, reached by monorail.

Skiing

The hotel is ski-in, ski-out. The resort’s three mountains – West, East and Isola – are linked by gondolas and offer 37 trails on long, wide, uncrowded slopes for beginners and experienced skiers alike, with more than 14 m of light powder snow each year. Trails are lit for night skiing, the ski and snowboard school has international instructors, and lift tickets can be reserved in advance.

Pets

Pets are not allowed at the hotel.
