About this hotel
General information
The Westin Miyako Kyoto spreads across the green hills of Higashiyama, at the foot of a wooded mountain and a short walk from Nanzen-ji temple. Its 266 rooms and suites are shaped by flowing curves, champagne-gold details and motifs taken from the Higashiyama landscape, a calm blend of modernism and Kyoto refinement. On the seventh floor, at the end of a private corridor, lies KASUIEN, a sukiya-style annex of twelve individually laid-out rooms, entered through a gate roofed in cypress bark and set around a white-sand courtyard.
Water from the hotel’s own hot spring, Kyoto Keage Onsen, fills the baths of SPA KACHO and the tubs of the KASUIEN rooms. Japanese gardens, a rooftop garden overlooking the city and a forest trail for birdwatching surround the buildings, while the Miyako Gallery traces the hotel’s long story. Three restaurants, a tea lounge and a bar, Westin’s well-being approach of sleeping, eating and moving well, and hands-on Kyoto crafts complete the stay; separate halls host weddings and meetings.
Location
The hotel stands in Higashiyama on the eastern side of Kyoto, in the Keage area near the Lake Biwa Canal, with Nanzen-ji temple and Heian Shrine close by. Exit 2 of Keage Station on the Tozai subway line is a two-minute walk away, and Kyoto Station is about 15 minutes by subway with one change, or roughly 25 minutes on the hotel’s free shuttle bus. The Satellite Concierge counter at Kyoto Station takes guests’ luggage and delivers it to the hotel free of charge. From Kansai International Airport, the Haruka limited express reaches Kyoto Station in about 75 minutes.
Spa
SPA KACHO, covering 2,100 m², draws on the hotel’s own Kyoto Keage Onsen spring. The men’s and women’s baths each have a semi-open-air bath that seems to merge with a pond, within earshot of a waterfall, beneath an arched wall echoing the old aqueduct of the Lake Biwa Canal. The men’s side has a large and a small bath, a jacuzzi, a dry sauna and a cold plunge; the women’s side has two baths, a jacuzzi and a steam sauna. Le Jardin Sothys has five treatment rooms, including one for couples, and combines Sothys treatments with shiatsu, moxibustion, meditation and yoga; its signature half-day Awaken and Sunset rituals pair a forest walk and a soak in the onsen with a three-hour face and body treatment. A separate Beauty & Relaxation Sothys salon offers hands-on facials and acupuncture.
Sports & leisure
The Westin WORKOUT Fitness Studio on the third floor is open to guests around the clock and has its own jacuzzi. Morning yoga takes place in the rooftop garden above the Kyoto skyline, and private sessions can be held in the room. A forest trail on the mountain behind the hotel passes through the habitat of some 50 species of wild birds, and hotel staff lead tours of the Japanese gardens, the rooftop garden and the art collection. The hotel also arranges kimono rental with in-room dressing and a photographer, workshops in scented-sachet making, Kyoto spinning tops and fan painting, incense blending at the Shoyeido studio, a tasting at the Matsui sake brewery and a day trip to the thatched-roof village of Miyama with a Japanese Black beef barbecue lunch.
For children
On request, the hotel’s guest services arrange a babysitter through outside childcare agencies.
