The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa

About this hotel

General information

The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa is a golf and spa resort in Kise, just outside Nago in the north of Okinawa Island. It sits within the grounds of the Kanehide Kise Country Club, whose 18-hole championship course wraps around the hotel on three sides and runs down towards the sea. Its 97 rooms and suites all have a terrace or balcony facing the fairways or the East China Sea, and the interiors carry details drawn from traditional Ryukyu design.

Beyond golf, the resort is known for its spa, set in a separate two-storey pavilion at the forest’s edge, and for Okinawan cooking in restaurants whose menus follow what the local market brings in. There are four dining venues, indoor and outdoor pools, a 24-hour fitness centre and a library of books and photography on Okinawa. Small meetings and weddings have their own spaces.

Location

The hotel lies in Kise on the edge of Nago, in northern Okinawa, looking out to the East China Sea; Kise Beach is 2 km away and Koki Beach 3 km. Naha Airport is about 70 km away; the hotel runs no shuttle of its own, but the Airport Limousine Bus and the Okinawa Airport Shuttle stop nearby.

Spa

A bamboo tunnel and a garden path lead to The Ritz-Carlton Spa Okinawa, about three minutes’ walk from the main building. The two-level pavilion, built of natural materials, stands beside an old-growth forest and has a vitality pool, relaxation cabanas, a dry sauna and a steam room tiled in Japanese coral (the heat facilities carry a charge). Treatments draw on Okinawan plants and traditions: the Yambaru Umikaji body ritual with local essential oils and warmed tiger clam shells, the Fu-Chi-Bah scalp massage with a warm poultice of local herbs, and ESPA facials; there is also a massage among the treetops. The spa is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm, and treatments are best booked ahead.

Sports & leisure

Golf comes first, on the Kanehide Kise Country Club course: two nine-hole loops, Umikaji and Yambaru, laid with Seashore Paspalum turf, plus a driving range, putting green, clubhouse and equipment rental. The fitness centre, with resistance and cardio equipment, is open around the clock, and bicycles can be hired. The Guest Relations team arranges more than 30 experiences, among them:

  • hikes through the Yambaru forest and guided ocean kayaking
  • Ryukyu Floating Sound Healing — stretching and meditation on the water to sound inspired by Okinawan myth
  • yoga in the early morning or the evening
  • coral seedling making at Onna fishing port with the local fisheries cooperative, with a talk on coral ecology
  • blending an Okinawan tea with local farmers, and bingata dyeing
  • a traditional Okinawan karate lesson with a master of one of the island’s three main styles
For children

The Ritz Kids programme introduces children to the island’s water, land, nature and culture: young guests hunt for wooden carvings of native animals in the gardens on the Yambaru Forest Explorers trail, photograph nature with an instant camera for the Ritz Kids Photographer contest, and can stage a Night Safari with a tent pitched in their room. There are kids’ yoga classes, and babysitting is available on request.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens work with local produce, from Okinawan beef to fish from the island’s markets:

  • Kise — teppanyaki of Okinawan Kuroge Wagyu and local seafood, cooked on the grill in front of guests; dinner
  • Riva Ristorante — Southern Italian cooking built on Okinawan seafood, herbs and seasonal ingredients; dinner
  • Gusuku — indoor and terrace seating; a breakfast buffet of Western and Ryukyu dishes, and Okinawan dinners to live sanshin music
  • Lobby Lounge & Bar — afternoon tea with seasonal pastries, small plates, cocktails and Okinawan awamori, with views of the sea and fairways
  • The Library — a quiet lounge facing the outdoor pool with light meals and drinks; an outdoor bar opens in season

In-room dining is available, and the Ritz-Nic picnic basket, with more than a dozen treats, can be delivered to any spot on the grounds.

Swimming

The hotel has no beach of its own; the nearest, Kise Beach, is 2 km away. On site there are an outdoor pool open in season, an indoor pool open daily from 9 am to 9 pm and a whirlpool, and the Cabana Rooms open directly onto the outdoor pool.

Pets

Pets are not accepted; service animals are welcome without a fee or documentation.
