The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko

About this hotel

General information

The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko sits on the eastern shore of Lake Chuzenji, high in the Oku-Nikko uplands of Nikko National Park. It is an intimate forest resort of 94 rooms and suites, each with a balcony facing the lake, Mount Nantai or a riverside garden, and the landscape around it turns with the seasons — blossom in spring, deep green in summer, russet in autumn and snow in winter.

The design pairs quiet minimalism with Japanese craft: rooms open through a genkan entry onto an engawa porch with a rock garden, and the walls of the Japanese restaurant carry carving in the local Nikko-bori style. At the heart of the hotel is its onsen, fed by thermal water from the Nikko Yumoto spring. The pace is unhurried — walks and bike rides in the national park, visits to Nikko's shrines and temples, and evenings by the fire.

Location

The hotel stands in Chugushi on the shore of Lake Chuzenji, roughly two and a half hours north of Tokyo, close to Kegon Falls, Chuzenji Temple and the Senjogahara marshland, as well as Nikko's UNESCO-listed shrines and temples. The nearest railway stations are Tobu Nikko and JR Nikko, and the nearest bus terminals Tobu-Nikko Station and Chuzenji Onsen. Narita and Haneda airports are both about 208–209 km away; a limousine transfer can be booked in advance.

Spa

The Ritz-Carlton Spa is built around an onsen supplied by the Nikko Yumoto spring, a sulphur water that runs clear at source and turns milky white in the air, with its distinctive scent. Guests have an indoor bath looking onto the garden, a cypress-scented dry sauna, a courtyard lounge and separate men's and women's lounges, and a private open-air onsen among the trees can be reserved. The menu covers massages, including for couples, facials, body scrubs, scalp treatments, paraffin hand treatments and foot baths. Signatures include The Art of Wellness, combining guided breathing with a Himalayan salt stone and rose quartz massage, a warm bamboo massage, and the Natural Resilience facial, drawing on Japanese Kobido massage and jade rollers.

Sports & leisure

The fitness studio is open around the clock, and every room has a yoga mat for practice on the balcony or by the lake. The hotel rents electric mountain bikes and runs guided rides through the Oku-Nikko forests to viewpoints, some with a boat crossing of the lake. Other experiences include a walk across the protected Senjogahara wetland with views of Mount Nantai, morning zazen with a monk from Chuzenji Temple, a fire ceremony at the temple preceded by sutra tracing, a Nikko-bori woodcarving class, prayer bead making and Japanese tea tastings. Around the lake there are hiking trails, fishing and paddleboarding, and in winter snowshoeing, fat biking and ice climbing.

For children

Ritz Kids introduces children to the hotel and the Oku-Nikko outdoors: in the Ritz Kids Scout programme they earn badges for activities, with enough badges making them a Lion Scout. Other fun includes a treasure-map hunt for a hidden monkey while parents dine, handheld fireworks for children and their carers on weekend nights, and building snowmen and mini igloos in winter. Ritz Kids Safari sets up play tents and toys in the room.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens work with produce from Tochigi's farms and vineyard and with sake from local breweries:

  • Japanese Restaurant by The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko — regional Japanese cooking, kaiseki dinners built on seasonal Tochigi ingredients and craft sake from nearby brewers; breakfast and lunch too
  • Lakehouse — Western dishes from local produce in a country-house spirit, with views over Lake Chuzenji
  • The Lobby Lounge — a garden-facing lounge with a fireplace, art and books for light meals, Nikko Afternoon Tea and Japanese tea tastings
  • The Bar — Japanese and international whiskies and original cocktails with Tochigi ingredients, chilled with natural ice from the local Tokujiro ice farm

The hotel packs picnics of salads, sandwiches and pastries for days out, and breakfast, lunch or dinner can be served in the room.

Skiing

The Oku-Nikko Yumoto ski park is close by; the hotel has ski lockers, and the slopes suit snowboarders and sledgers as well.
