The Fujiya Hotel

About this hotel

General information

The Fujiya Hotel is a classic resort hotel in Miyanoshita, at the heart of the Hakone mountains. Its 120 rooms are spread across four buildings from different eras: The Main of 1891, the twin wooden Western-style houses Comfy Lodge and Restful Cottage of 1906, the Flower Palace of 1936 and the Forest Wing of 1960. The first three are registered tangible cultural properties of Japan, where tiled roofs with curved gables in the manner of temples and shrines meet European sash windows, storm shutters and carved ceilings.

The most striking of them is the Flower Palace, with its red-railed balconies: every room there carries the name of a flower, repeated in the carpets, on the doors and even on the key. The hotel's own hot springs supply the baths in every room, the top-floor spa and the indoor pool. The grounds hold a garden of about 16,500 m² with a 15–20-minute walking path, a Japanese garden with a carp pond and red bridge, a herb garden, a hotel museum, a gallery and a bakery.

Location

The hotel stands in Miyanoshita, part of the town of Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture, below Mount Sengen. From Tokyo Station the Kodama Shinkansen takes about 35 minutes to Odawara, then a bus about 30 minutes to the Hotel-mae stop, 2 minutes' walk away — roughly 90 minutes in all. From Shinjuku the Odakyu Romancecar express reaches Hakone-Yumoto in about 90 minutes, and the Hakone Tozan Railway continues to Miyanoshita station in 25 minutes, a 7-minute walk from the hotel. The journey from Haneda Airport takes about 100 minutes and from Narita about 150 minutes; by car from Tokyo it is about 90 minutes, with free parking on site.

Spa

The Spa on the sixth floor of the Forest Wing is reserved for hotel guests: separate men's and women's baths each have an indoor bath, a semi-open-air bath and a sauna, looking out over the outer ring of the Hakone caldera. They are filled with sodium-chloride water from the Miyanoshita spring, one of the seven celebrated hot springs of Hakone. In the same wing, Relaxation — ZEN is set in a temple-inspired room dressed with Japanese crafts, offering facials with its own ZEN skincare made with Japanese rose, cherry blossom, yuzu, tea leaf and rice ceramides, and a signature face-and-body treatment with rose oil.

Sports & leisure

Guests have two gyms: the FUJIYA Fitness Centre in the Forest Wing, bright with large windows and open around the clock, and a small Technogym-equipped room in the Flower Palace. Sengoku Golf Course lies 15 minutes away by car, and the hotel itself offers:

  • an early-morning photography tour to a viewpoint over Mount Fuji, about 20 minutes' drive from the hotel
  • a hiking trail up Mount Sengen directly behind the hotel, with the Fuji View Stand lookout halfway up (about 2.5 hours, 373 m of ascent)
  • walks through the main, Japanese and herb gardens, a hotel museum with items from the hotel's history and the Cozy gallery of paintings of the hotel
Restaurants & bars

The hotel has three restaurants — French, Japanese and Western — plus a lounge, a bar and evening room service.

  • Main Dining Room "The Fujiya" — the grand dining hall, its 6-metre coffered ceiling painted with 636 Japanese alpine plants above carved columns; served breakfast and classic French cuisine
  • Kikka-so — Japanese cuisine in a late-19th-century wooden villa of traditional architecture with its own Japanese garden; breakfast, lunch and dinner by reservation, with private rooms
  • Restaurant Cascade — Western cooking from the hotel's old recipes in a former 1920 banquet hall with stained glass and carved transoms
  • Lounge — the house apple pie, sweets, light snacks and afternoon tea overlooking the garden
  • Bar Victoria — a classic bar for cocktails and well-known labels from around the world
  • Bakery & Sweets PICOT — the hotel bakery, with its own breads and pastries and a small eat-in corner
Swimming

The Mermaid indoor pool beneath the Flower Palace is filled with Miyanoshita hot-spring water (12 × 5.5 m, around 30 °C) and is open all year to hotel guests only. In summer a 30.5-metre outdoor pool with changing rooms opens in the garden, also for guests only.

Rooms

The 120 rooms and suites are spread across four buildings, each with its own character: high ceilings and classic furniture in The Main and the Western-style Comfy Lodge and Restful Cottage, floral motifs and a blend of Japanese and European detailing in the Flower Palace, and a restrained 1960s Japanese style in the Forest Wing. Every bath is filled from the hotel's hot springs; Comfy Lodge and Restful Cottage have no lifts.
