About this hotel
General information
Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto lies on the Hozu River in Arashiyama, on the western edge of Kyoto, in a landscape of jade-green water, mountains and bamboo groves that served as a country retreat for the aristocracy for more than a thousand years. The hotel occupies a historic estate: in its Japanese garden stands a Meiji-period villa built in 1899 as a summer residence, now home to the Kyo-Suiran restaurant, and right on the riverbank a century-old thatched house built for poets, with their verses brushed in calligraphy onto the walls.
There are 39 rooms and suites, six of them specialty rooms, and 17 have their own onsen bath filled from the hot spring. Interiors pair traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern comfort. The hotel is known for washoku cooking with French presentation, Japanese-style afternoon tea above the river, a spa with open-air baths in the garden and a quiet guest programme, from a tour of the estate’s art treasures to a morning calligraphy session tracing poems written on this very spot.
Location
The hotel stands in Ukyo ward, in Arashiyama in western Kyoto, on the bank of the Hozu River facing the Arashiyama hills; Tenryu-ji and Hogon-in temples are on the same street, and Togetsukyo Bridge and the bamboo forest are close by. The nearest stations are JR Saga-Arashiyama, Hankyu Arashiyama and Keifuku Arashiyama. Itami Airport is about 49 km away and Kansai Airport about 117 km; the hotel runs no shuttle. Booked at least three days ahead, it provides a one-way taxi transfer from JR Kyoto Station and a rickshaw ride from or to JR Saga-Arashiyama or Keifuku Arashiyama station.
Spa
The spa has two treatment rooms set in a secluded Japanese garden, each with a traditional open-air bath of hot-spring water, and treatments can also be given in the room. The menu draws on Japanese ingredients: treatments with tea-seed oil, green-tea scrubs, jade-stone facials and collagen masks. The signature Seiran and Sansui rituals combine zuko, a traditional incense, with a half-body aroma-oil massage scented with yuzu and hinoki cypress, while Gekka pairs an oil treatment timed to the lunar cycle with zuko and a jade-stone facial. Beyond the in-room baths, guests can use a private spa room with a larger open-air bath.
Sports & leisure
There is no gym or swimming pool: leisure here means Arashiyama itself and the guest programme. Every evening Cafe Hassui pours champagne and wine as dusk settles over the Hozu River and the hills; on Friday mornings the concierge leads a session in which guests trace one of the poems that eight Meiji-era poets composed in this very house; and an art tour takes in the historic corners and precious works of the estate. From the hotel, walks lead through the garden to old temples and the bamboo forest, and the concierge arranges transport, restaurants and reservations before arrival and during the stay.
Restaurants & bars
The hotel has three restaurants, and dishes from their kitchens are also served in the rooms.
- Kyo-Suiran — washoku with French presentation and fresh local produce in a restored Meiji-period villa set in a garden, with ceiling beams cut from whole tree trunks, shoji screens, original art and floor-to-ceiling windows onto the Arashiyama hills and the Hozu River; breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a private dining room
- Cafe Hassui — a riverside café in a century-old thatched building shaded by trees, with indoor and terrace seating, original artwork and calligraphy poems on the walls; light meals, Japanese-style afternoon tea with a wide choice of drinks, handmade Japanese sodas and hisui-mochi filled with matcha
- Teppanyaki Kanzan — teppanyaki of premium beef and fresh seafood cooked in front of guests
