ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts

About this hotel

General information

ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts lies at the foot of the Takagamine mountains in northern Kyoto, above the Tenjin River, on the southern edge of a large estate of Japanese gardens and tea pavilions. In an area where a community of artists and craftspeople settled several centuries ago, the hotel is conceived as an artist’s residence: traditional Kyoto interiors are reinterpreted in a contemporary way, and the line between indoors and nature all but disappears, from an open-air foyer with timber beams and a water basin planted with aquatic plants to covered walkways among the trees.

Each space is devoted to one craft: karakami decorative paper in the rooms, hand-made lacquer panels in the lobby, reception and Tea House, woven bamboo artworks in the restaurant and ceramics in the spa. There are 114 rooms and suites, the French restaurant TENJIN, a bar and a Tea House where guests are welcomed with local seasonal tea. The hotel is known for its outdoor thermal pool, filled from a natural hot spring and used all year round, and for a programme of craft workshops and tea ceremonies with Kyoto artisans.

Location

The hotel stands in Takagamine, in Kita ward in northern Kyoto, 1.2 km from Kinkaku-ji, 2.6 km from Ryoan-ji, 3.7 km from Ninna-ji and 6.2 km from the Gion district. From Kyoto Station it is about 30 minutes by taxi, or 13 minutes on the Karasuma subway line to Kita-Oji Station and about 10 minutes by taxi from there. Itami Airport is 49 km away, about an hour by taxi; Kansai Airport is 103 km away, about two hours by taxi or roughly 75 minutes on the Haruka express to Kyoto Station. There is free on-site parking with EV charging.

Spa

THE ROKU SPA follows a “Kyoto Elements” concept and brings together treatment rooms, a consultation area, the thermal pool and the gym. The signature treatment is the Tenjingawa Stone Massage, using warm stones that have been steeped in the water of the Tenjin River; the menu also includes Balancing Elements massages, scrubs and wraps with oils matched to each guest’s element, deep tissue and foot massages, and facials for women and men, among them Valmont treatments. The spa has its own body oil blended with essential oils of Kitayama cedar and hinoki, and treatments can be combined with the hotel’s activities into longer spa journeys.

Sports & leisure

The 24-hour gym has floor-to-ceiling windows onto the mountains, and personal training, private yoga sessions and instructor-led floating meditation in the thermal pool can be booked. The heart of the leisure programme is Kyoto craft: washi paper making, kintsugi, karakami printing with the hotel’s own pattern, porcelain made with clay from the hotel grounds, weaving at a traditional textile studio, and intimate workshops with local karakami, bamboo, lacquer and ceramic artisans that begin with an introduction in the Tea House. Tea ceremonies take place in a historic teahouse among cedars and maples in the neighbouring Japanese garden, where a monk also leads morning Zen meditation. A treasure hunt across the grounds with a map is free for all guests.

For children

Young guests receive an activity kit with missions that send them around the grounds to learn about local history and sights, with a small gift at the end. The craft workshops have a children’s version with simple projects, families can follow the treasure map together, and children aged 5–10 can join a free behind-the-scenes tour of the hotel, one group a day. Childcare is also among the hotel’s services.

Restaurants & bars

Restaurant TENJIN is divided into distinct zones, from the dining room and terrace to an engawa-style space and private rooms, with the Tea House alongside.

  • TENJIN All-Day Dining — breakfast, lunch, dinner and light bites in between: seasonal dishes from local produce, à la carte or as set courses
  • TENJIN Chef’s Table — an evening tasting course of nature-themed French cuisine built on the finest seasonal produce; booking by 5 pm the day before
  • TENJIN The Bar — a bar overlooking the reflecting water basin, with Japanese spirits, signature cocktails made from natural ingredients, light meals and snacks
  • Tea House — where a stay begins, with local teas chosen for the season
Swimming

The outdoor Takagamine Thermal pool is filled with alkaline water from a natural hot spring and open all year; it is kept gently warm for long soaks and floating meditation and seems to flow into the landscape around it. Alongside are a thermal room for quiet and meditation and a tent sauna by the pool. Pool visits are booked in advance in 60-minute sessions, and the Poolside Terrace Rooms open straight onto the pool from their terraces.
