About this hotel
General information
HOSHINOYA Okinawa is a resort on the west coast of Okinawa Island, in the village of Yomitan, where the culture of the old Ryukyu Kingdom is given a contemporary reading. The grounds are enclosed by gently curving walls of Ryukyu limestone modelled on the gusuku, the island's ancient castle strongholds. The stonework is pierced with a pattern from Yomitan's traditional textile, a sign of longevity and prosperity, and in the morning the sun falls through it into the corridors. Inside the walls are orchards, vegetable plots and tropical flowers.
All 100 rooms are suites and villas at ground level facing the ocean, so the sea is in view from every part of the resort. The lobby walls carry five coats of deep-blue plaster that recall the sea floor, a brush painting of the sea off Yomitan on Japanese paper hangs behind the reception desk, and a ceramic guardian lion sits at the entrance. A separate dojo pavilion under a red-tiled roof, with an open veranda and a cedar floor, is given over to cultural sessions, and through the year the resort marks festivals of the old Ryukyu lunar calendar.
Location
The resort sits right above the rocky Gima coast in Yomitan, in central Okinawa, with the white sand of Nirai Beach a 10-minute walk away. From Naha Airport the drive takes around 70 minutes along National Route 58, with an alternative route via the Okinawa Expressway. A paid airport limousine bus runs from the airport (seats are reserved in advance), hire cars are available at the airport, and a paid helicopter taxi flies from Naha. Open-air parking is free for guests.
Spa
HOSHINOYA Okinawa Spa occupies a separate building under a red-tiled roof, its treatment and relaxation rooms set around a courtyard, with a treatment room for two that has an open bathroom. Treatments draw on the sea and plants of Okinawa: massage with slow, wave-like strokes timed to the breath, menus using sea salt, mud and seaweed, and treatments with shell ginger, a native plant with a soft fragrance. Guests can stretch in the dojo before a session. The hour-long massage is for guests aged 18 and over.
Sports & leisure
The heated pool is open around the clock all year, and the resort offers time on the sea, in nature and in Ryukyu culture:
- Morning rides along the beach and horseback routes from the resort's stables across Yomitan's green grasslands above the sea
- Snorkelling, introductory dives and scuba diving with an instructor on the reefs off Yomitan
- A private morning trip to the Blue Cave and a private sunset cruise along the west coast
- Eco tours in the Yanbaru forests of northern Okinawa – hiking, kayaking and paddling along mangrove-lined rivers, one group a day
- Karate and traditional Ryukyu martial arts lessons, plus sessions in local arts at the ocean-view dojo
- Bingata textile dyeing with craftspeople and Ryukyu court cooking classes using herbs from the resort's own garden
- A walk through the historic village of Yuntanza and programmes devoted to Okinawan food and customs
- The three-night Ryukyu Holistic Wellness Program of karate, traditional dance, aqua exercise, acupuncture, moxibustion and shiatsu (ages 16 and over)
For children
The Kids' Room, a playroom for children aged 12 and under, opens in the morning and the evening, with children accompanied by an adult. Childcare can be booked seven days ahead so that parents can visit the spa or dine.
Restaurants & bars
Breakfast and dinner are booked separately once the stay is reserved; Salone, a private dining room, seats groups of 12 to 20.
- Bellezza (Ryukyu Gastronomia) — Italian cooking with a Sicilian accent, made with Okinawan produce and island culinary traditions; dinner by reservation, and in the morning a breakfast built around a choice of three main dishes
- Gathering dining service — a dinner the chef prepares and leaves in the patio refrigerator for guests to finish themselves with the patio's kitchen equipment
- In-room dining — a Japanese or Western breakfast with an ocean view, and a late menu of light dishes to go with drinks
- Poolside lounge — evening performances of sanshin music, Ryukyu dance and karate
- BANTA CAFE by Hoshino Resorts — a large café nearby on a low cliff, with two wings running parallel to the sea and a grill cooking steak and seafood over a wood fire
Swimming
An infinity pool along the cliff seems to run straight into the sea: four sections of different depths start at 10 cm and step down towards the ocean, with chairs set in the shallows and a day bed alongside. The pool is heated all year and open 24 hours. In front of the rooms lies the natural rocky Gima coast with its coral reef for walks, and the shallow white-sand Nirai Beach, a 10-minute walk away, is the place for a swim. The Tida villa has its own heated 20-metre pool.
