Gora Kadan

About this hotel

General information

Gora Kadan is a ryokan in Gora, a hot-spring town in the mountains of Hakone, set on the grounds of a historic villa from the early twentieth century. The villa's Western-style house still stands and now holds a kaiseki restaurant and an eight-seat sushi counter, while the garden and guest wings around it pair Japanese tradition with restrained modern design.

The ryokan draws on three hot-spring sources of its own, all mildly alkaline and two of them rising in the garden, with the water flowing straight from the source into the baths. Rooms fall into five groups, from the separate Bettei wing and the Annex to the Kadan Suites, rooms with open-air baths and standard rooms, and nearly every one has a bath of its own: stone and open to the sky, panoramic and made of hinoki cypress, or wooden and indoors. The kaiseki dinner menu changes every month, and stays include dinner and breakfast.

Location

The ryokan sits in Gora in the Hakone mountains of Kanagawa Prefecture, a 3-minute walk from Gora Station on the Hakone mountain railway; a call from the station brings the ryokan's car to collect guests. From Tokyo Station the Shinkansen reaches Odawara in about 35 minutes, followed by the mountain railway or a taxi of around 40 minutes; from Shinjuku the Odakyu Romancecar runs to Hakone-Yumoto in 100 minutes. The ryokan's limousine transfer from Tokyo or Haneda Airport takes about two hours, and the same service is offered from Narita.

Spa

KADAN SPA is open daily from morning to late evening, with facials (including ones using SENSAI products), body treatments with oil tailored to the guest, and combined body and facial programmes. In the evening, shiatsu or meridian therapy with moxibustion can be booked in the room. Bathing matters just as much here: the shared baths, filled from the ryokan's own springs, are separated for men and women and swapped overnight so guests can try both, one with a dry sauna and the other with a steam sauna. A private open-air bath with a steam sauna can be reserved for 40 minutes at no charge, and a bedrock bath of natural stone is available for a fee.

Sports & leisure

The ryokan has a fitness room with up-to-date equipment open around the clock, as well as Salon Seiran with its library; go and shogi sets are lent on request. The ryokan's car takes guests free of charge around Gora, to museums, Gora Park or lunch. For days out, the ryokan suggests:

  • a sightseeing cruise on Lake Ashi, as well as motorboat, canoe or kayak outings on the lake
  • the Owakudani valley, viewpoints facing Mount Fuji, the Hakone checkpoint, Hakone Shrine and the old cedar avenue
  • the Okada Museum of Art, The Hakone Open-Air Museum and the Hakone Museum of Art, with pick-up for guests, plus the POLA Museum and the Lalique Museum
  • a private hike in the Hakone hills with a local guide
  • a tour of a sake brewery
Restaurants & bars

Stays include dinner and breakfast, usually served in the room; guests in Annex Senshin and Annex Meigetsu take both meals at Kaiseki KADAN Hakone. Dinner is a seasonal kaiseki whose menu changes monthly, with shabu-shabu, sukiyaki and a wagyu kaiseki as alternatives, and vegetarian or gluten-free dishes prepared with advance notice. Breakfast is Japanese or Western.

  • Kaiseki KADAN Hakone — kaiseki restaurant in the historic Western-style villa, including a vegetarian course; also open to non-resident diners
  • Sushi Kadan — eight-seat sushi counter on the upper floor of the historic villa, with a single evening seating
  • Hanakage — lounge overlooking the garden for drinks and light snacks, turning into a bar in the evening
  • Seiran — relaxation salon with a library, serving chilled matcha in the evening
Swimming

A heated indoor pool sits in a bright, orangery-like space, with an outdoor Jacuzzi alongside. It is open all year and free for guests, though each one-hour slot must be booked in advance.

Pets

Pets are not accepted, with the exception of guide dogs and other assistance dogs.
