Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto

About this hotel

General information

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto opened in November 2016 at the foot of the hills in Higashiyama, Kyoto’s temple district, a few minutes’ drive from the historic centre. At its heart lies Shakusui-en, a pond garden laid out some 800 years ago at the close of the Heian period, where the Shakusui-tei tea room and the FUJU lounge, reached by a glass bridge, sit among the trees; the contemporary Japanese rooms look out over the garden, the city or Myoho-in temple.

Kyoto’s culture is woven into a stay: tea ceremonies, kintsugi and Japanese-sweets workshops, rickshaw rides through the old quarters. The spa, with its 20-metre pool, works with Biologique Recherche, Sushi Ginza Onodera serves Edomae sushi omakase-style, EMBA Kyoto Grill specialises in charcoal-grilled meat and seafood, and four event spaces totalling 569 m² sit alongside a chapel for weddings.

Location

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from central Kyoto, the Imperial Palace and the Gion district, 1.8 km from Kyoto station and around an hour and a half by road from Kansai International Airport.

Spa

The spa, designed in a contemporary Japanese style, has a 20-metre indoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, beauty salon, gym, relaxation area and seven treatment rooms, including a couples’ suite. Treatments range from programmes rooted in Japanese tradition to massages, baths and facials with the French brand Biologique Recherche.

Sports & leisure

The 24-hour fitness centre has strength and cardio equipment and studio classes, and the spa adds a 20-metre indoor pool and whirlpools. Activities draw on Kyoto’s traditions: the tea ceremony at Shakusui-tei, kintsugi, sushi and Japanese-sweets classes, rickshaw rides, guided cycling tours and maiko performances.

For children

The hotel is set up for families, with a complimentary kids’ programme, a playroom, koi feeding in the garden, child-size bathrobes, strollers and high chairs, and babysitting on request.

Restaurants & bars

The venues are arranged around the Shakusui-en pond garden, and in-room dining runs around the clock.

  • Sushi Ginza Onodera — Edomae sushi served omakase-style at a ten-seat counter of 400-year-old Japanese cypress
  • EMBA Kyoto Grill — dry-aged and charcoal-grilled wagyu and seafood, with a garden-view dining room and a waterside terrace; seasonal afternoon tea is served here too
  • FUJU — a garden lounge reached by a glass bridge, with matcha and Kyoto sweets by day and sake or champagne on the terrace in the evening
  • SEY — an izakaya-inspired cocktail bar with artisanal local spirits, Japanese whiskies and bar snacks
Pets

Pets are welcome.
