About this hotel
General information
Amanemu is a hot-spring resort on the shore of Ago Bay, set among the wooded hills of Ise-Shima National Park. Its suites and villas take their cue from minka, Japan’s traditional country houses — timber, low rooflines and woven textile shutters that fold back onto generous verandas — and every one has a private onsen bath filled with mineral water from the springs nearby.
At its centre is a 2,000 m² spa built around a large hot-spring bath. The Restaurant looks out over forest and bay and cooks with what the sea and farms of Ise-Shima provide, while The Lounge bar sits beside the outdoor pool. Days revolve around the Ise Grand Shrine, the culture of the ama freedivers and pearl farming, hiking in the national park and time out on the bay. Stays include daily breakfast and dinner, along with transfers from Kashikojima Station.
Location
The resort lies on the Ago Bay coast near the town of Shima in Mie Prefecture. The nearest airport is Chubu Centrair International near Nagoya, about three hours away by car, or by train via Nagoya to Kashikojima Station, where the resort’s car makes the 20-minute final leg; there is also a private helicopter landing spot on site. A direct train runs from Kyoto to Kashikojima in around 2 hours 45 minutes, and from Tokyo the route is the bullet train to Nagoya, then a Kintetsu train onwards.
Spa
Amanemu’s 2,000 m² spa is designed around a large bath fed by the mineral-rich hot springs of Ise-Shima, with a thermal spring garden laid out with daybeds. It has two private onsen bathing pavilions, four treatment suites, the Aqua Movement Suite for water-based treatments, a dry sauna and steam room, and a salon for manicures and pedicures. Treatments include personalised spa journeys with Aman Skincare blends, kampo herbs and local essential oils, herbal baths drawn from kampo principles, shiatsu, acupuncture and moxibustion, seasonal rituals using pearl powder and seaweed, and the Aman Advanced Facial.
Sports & leisure
The fitness studio has cardio and strength equipment and a Power Plate, the yoga studio is fitted for TRX, and there is an outdoor yoga deck as well as SUP yoga on the bay. The resort arranges lunch in an ama divers’ hut with charcoal-grilled seafood and the divers’ own stories, visits to the Outer and Inner Shrines of Ise with a walk along the old approach, a private sunset cruise on Ago Bay, and charter cruises and fishing trips. Other options include making jewellery with Ise-Shima pearls and crafts from washi paper, a guided forest hike to a summit overlooking a neighbouring bay, Japanese calligraphy, roasting traditional rice crackers, flower arranging with a local florist, sake tasting, a ritual dance at dusk on the Sunken Terrace, trips to the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes and a round on an 18-hole golf course.
For children
Younger guests have the Kids Academy, a children’s club with games and activities.
Restaurants & bars
The Restaurant, facing the forest and the bay, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, pairing Japanese cooking with international dishes built on seasonal local produce such as Matsusaka beef and spiny lobster and abalone from Ago Bay. Its signature Japanese breakfast arrives in a white wooden box, inspired by the meals served near the Ise Grand Shrine, and the Ise Shima Roman Course is a tasting menu of caviar, truffle, lobster, wagyu and abalone. The Lounge, by the pool, pours Japanese craft beers and cocktails made with regional fruit and herbs, and in the evening the lantern-lit Sunken Terrace watches the sun go down over the sea; sweets are served there in the afternoon. Tastings of Mie Prefecture teas take place in the library, and sake tastings can be arranged.
Swimming
The 33-metre main outdoor pool overlooks Ago Bay, with The Lounge bar beside it.
