Aman Kyoto

About this hotel

General information

Aman Kyoto opened in November 2019 in a wooded corner of Kyoto, on land where the Rinpa school of painting was founded some four hundred years ago. Its ryokan-inspired pavilions sit lightly in the landscape: a forest of old maples and cedars, a garden of moss-covered stone paths, a stream and natural mineral springs that feed the onsen baths.

Floor-to-ceiling windows turn every pavilion towards the forest and garden. Taka-An serves Japanese omakase and the Living Pavilion Kyoto dishes alongside Western cooking, Aman Spa has indoor and open-air onsen, and the days can be shaped around yoga, meditation, ikebana and the tea ceremony in the Senkutsu tea house. It is Aman’s contemporary service set within Japan’s oldest traditions of hospitality.

Location

The hotel lies in a garden setting not far from central Kyoto and the Kinkaku-ji temple. The railway station is about half an hour away by car, Osaka International Airport an hour, and Kansai International Airport two hours.

Spa

Aman Spa has indoor and outdoor onsen filled from natural springs, a relaxation area and three treatment rooms. Massages and rituals draw on Japanese techniques, shiatsu and acupuncture among them, and on local ingredients such as Kyoto green tea, sake and camellia oil, while facials use Aman’s Japanese-made Essential Skin range.

Sports & leisure

Yoga in the garden, meditation with a Zen monk, forest bathing, ikebana classes, bicycles for exploring the city and guided excursions are on offer. There is no gym or pool; the indoor and outdoor mineral-spring onsen take their place.

Restaurants & bars

Taka-An presents a seasonal Japanese omakase menu from the chef, while the Living Pavilion, with a terrace over the garden and forest, serves Kyoto dishes, Western cooking and afternoon tea. Guests are offered matcha with seasonal sweets each afternoon and an aperitif in the evening, and the resort arranges tea ceremonies in the Senkutsu tea house, garden picnics and in-room dining.

The pavilion rooms follow the ryokan tradition, pairing minimalist design with modern comfort, and their full-height windows open onto the old forest and garden.
