About this hotel
General information
Il Pellicano sits on rocks that fall away to clear Mediterranean water, a main house and a scatter of cottages set in gardens of old olive trees, cypresses and flowering beds. It was founded in 1965 by the English aviator Michael Graham and the American heiress Patsy Daszel, who named it after Pelican Point in California, where they had first met. Charlie Chaplin, Henry Fonda and members of Europe’s royal families have stayed here, and the house still keeps an aristocratic ease and a Tuscan warmth.
Its gastronomic restaurant, recognised by Michelin, serves Mediterranean cooking; there is also a summer restaurant with sea views, a piano bar and a well-stocked wine cellar. Guests have a spa, a heated outdoor pool, a tennis court and a private rock beach, along with the 50-seat Olive meeting room, a boutique, a wine shop, a garage, limousine service and yacht charter.
Location
The hotel lies in the Maremma, on the Monte Argentario peninsula, 4 km from Porto Ercole. Rome’s Termini station is about two hours away by train, and Rome Fiumicino airport is 150 km.
Spa
The Pelliclub spa has a caldarium – a Romanesque steam room lined with Bisazza mosaic – a beauty salon and treatment rooms. Massages, peels, wraps and facials are tailored to each guest, and there are dedicated programmes for skin after time in the sun.
Sports & leisure
The heated seawater pool is framed by a terrace looking out to sea. There is a tennis court with equipment to borrow and a fitness centre, and the hotel arranges outings on its own yacht, water sports, riding, polo, cookery courses and excursions. An 18-hole golf course is 10 km away.
Restaurants & bars
Cooking leans on local produce, including vegetables and herbs from the hotel’s own kitchen garden:
- Il Pellicano — Michelin-starred Mediterranean cooking, fresh fish and seafood; a sea-view terrace with jazz in the evenings
- Pelligrill — May to September, Tuscan dishes and grilled meat and fish on a terrace above the pool and the sea
- La Cantina — wine cellar with more than 800 Italian and international labels, tastings and talks
- Piano bar — an elegant room with a fireplace
- Pelican Martini — bar with a fireplace
Swimming
The hotel’s private beach is a sunbathing platform on the rocks, reached by lift.
