Grand Hotel Majestic “già Baglioni”

About this hotel

General information

Grand Hotel Majestic “già Baglioni”, the only five-star luxury hotel in Bologna, occupies an 18th-century palazzo on Via dell’Indipendenza. Built between 1732 and 1751 as the archbishop’s seminary to a design by Alfonso Torreggiani, it became a hotel in 1912 and has since hosted royalty, politicians, Nobel laureates and film stars. It belongs to the Italian group Duetorrihotels and has been a member of The Leading Hotels of the World since 1990.

History is part of the fabric: the piano nobile keeps the Camerino di Europa, frescoed by the Carracci brothers in the 16th century, and the basement reveals some ten metres of Roman road. Interiors follow Venetian and 18th-century French style, with silk, brocade, Murano glass, Carrara marble and antiques. Seven meeting rooms, historic and modern, take up to 100 people, and the palazzo’s historic spaces host weddings and private celebrations.

Location

The hotel stands on pedestrianised Via dell’Indipendenza in Bologna’s historic centre, opposite the Cathedral of San Pietro and a short walk from the city’s museums, theatres and galleries, and well placed for the trade fair and financial districts. Bologna Centrale station is 900 m away and Guglielmo Marconi International Airport 8 km from the centre, linked by shuttle bus and taxi. Cars arrive at the side entrance on Via Manzoni, where valet parking takes over.

Spa

The Health & Wellness centre is a quiet retreat in the city, with a Turkish bath, sauna, chromotherapy shower and relaxation room. The new Comfort Room offers face and body treatments using Italian-made Comfort Zone products.

Sports & leisure

The fitness area is equipped by Technogym, which has named the hotel a Technogym Top Location. The hotel’s own programme includes fresh-pasta cooking classes with the chef, tastings at Enoteca Morandi, private tours of Bologna, visits to producers of Parmigiano, prosciutto and balsamic vinegar, the Ferrari Museum in Maranello with an optional test drive, the Lamborghini museum and factory, and day trips to Modena, Ferrara and Ravenna.

For children

Every child receives a welcome gift, I Carracci has its own children’s menu, and the hotel suggests Bologna museums suited to young visitors, among them the Bolognese Puppet House.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurant and bars occupy the palazzo’s historic rooms and are also open to non-residents.

  • I Carracci — dining beneath a vaulted ceiling frescoed by the Carracci school, where chef Agostino Schettino cooks contemporary food rooted in Emilian and Italian tradition, with tasting menus including a vegetarian one; listed in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide
  • Café Marinetti — an Art Deco café with a marble floor laid by Tuscan artisans and live piano, for coffee, aperitifs and the house cocktail, the Roberta
  • Enoteca Morandi — a 15th-century wine cellar with more than 300 Italian and international labels, sommelier-led tastings and private dinners
  • Majestic Terraces — flower-filled terraces on the piano nobile, the Terrazza Torre overlooking Palazzo Fava and the Terrazza Foyer, for aperitifs and drinks outdoors
  • Breakfast Room and Winter Garden — a buffet breakfast room opening onto a winter garden with early 20th-century trompe-l’œil paintings and a roof that opens in the warmer months
Pets

Small and medium-sized pets are welcome in rooms and public areas, with a welcome set and a Pet Care service. Only small dogs may join their owners in the breakfast room, restaurant and Café Marinetti, and a large park with dog areas lies close to the hotel.
