About this hotel
General information
This Belle Époque palace was built in 1861 on the shore of Lake Maggiore, facing the Borromean Islands. Its façade looks straight onto the water, a large park surrounds it and the centre of Stresa is a five-minute walk away. The guestbook reads like a chronicle of the age: King Leopold II of Belgium, King Oscar II of Sweden, members of the British royal family, the Vanderbilts, Carnegies, Rockefellers and Morgans, George Bernard Shaw and Ernest Hemingway all stayed here.
Beyond the main building, the estate includes Villa Azalee, used for business meetings, and a two-storey Residence of bungalow villas. The hotel has its own spa, two outdoor pools and one indoor pool, a restaurant and two bars, conference rooms for up to 350 guests, parking and a private helipad.
Location
The hotel is in Stresa on the shore of Lake Maggiore, 60 km from Milan Malpensa airport.
Spa
The CBS spa (Centro Benessere Stresa) is the hotel’s pride. It builds anti-stress, rehabilitation and beauty programmes around tailored diets, exercise, walks, massage (including Eastern techniques and hot stones) and thermal baths using local waters and clay as well as Dead Sea minerals. Beauty rooms offer bio-lifting, collagen filling, deep cleansing and facial peels, herbal wraps, masks and dermatological treatments. There is also a heated indoor pool.
Sports & leisure
The grounds have two heated outdoor pools, tennis courts and private motorboats and yachts. Within 5–40 km there are seven major golf clubs with courses of up to 18 holes, as well as horse riding and mountain biking, and in winter ski resorts are close at hand.
For children
Babysitting can be arranged on request.
Restaurants & bars
The hotel has one restaurant and two bars:
- Il Borromeo — Italian and international cuisine, regarded as Stresa’s leading dining address
- Piano bar — in the lobby, for quiet evenings to the sound of the piano
- Pool bar — open in summer, serving fresh juices, cool cocktails and other drinks
