San Casciano dei Bagni

Fonteverde Lifestyle & Thermal Retreat

About this hotel

General information

Fonteverde lies among the wooded hills of San Casciano dei Bagni, an area with 43 thermal springs rising at around 42 °C. Rich in sulphates, calcium and fluoride, the water has been prized since the 17th century, when Ferdinando I de’ Medici founded the first healing baths here. He also built the villa, in 1607, that now forms the historic heart of the resort, joined by a newer building in Renaissance style. The hotel reopened in 2002 after extensive restoration.

A large park of olive groves, vineyards and fast-running streams surrounds both buildings. Interiors evoke an aristocratic Renaissance country residence, but the real jewel is the award-winning spa with its seven thermal pools. Sovana, Chiusi and the medieval villages nearby make easy excursions, and three meeting rooms hold up to 80 guests.

Location

The resort is in the centre of San Casciano dei Bagni, 150 km from Florence and 200 km from Rome Fiumicino International Airport.

Spa

The spa has won a string of international awards, among them Spa Finder’s Crystal Award for best spa in Italy. Its 24 treatment rooms offer aesthetic and physiotherapy treatments, shiatsu, Ayurvedic and other massages, anti-stress and insomnia programmes, and facial and body rituals built around the thermal water. There are seven thermal pools — a large outdoor pool linked to a smaller indoor one, the Bioaquam Circuit with hydromassage features, a hydromassage pool, a hotel-guests-only pool, a balneotherapy pool and a separate pool for pets — plus a Turkish bath, sauna and gym.

Sports & leisure

Horse riding and mountain biking are available on the estate, with tennis courts and golf courses nearby.

Restaurants & bars

Two restaurants, a bar and a café each pair Tuscan dishes with a dietetic menu:

  • Ferdinando I — gastronomic Tuscan cuisine and a dietetic menu with views over the hills
  • La Corte — open-air restaurant with a Tuscan and dietetic buffet
  • Il Falconiere — bar with an extensive drinks list
  • Bioaquam Café — light Tuscan and dietetic dishes beside the pool
Pets

Pets are welcome, and even have their own thermal pool.
