COMO Castello del Nero

About this hotel

General information

COMO Castello del Nero occupies a 12th-century castle that once belonged to the Nero family, Florentine aristocrats. The 300-hectare estate unfolds across the Chianti hills, its Italian garden, vineyards and olive groves wrapped around walls that still hold Renaissance frescoes, massive fireplaces, vaulted ceilings and antique furniture.

The historic halls now house contemporary rooms, restaurants including the Michelin-starred La Torre, a wine cellar and a COMO Shambhala Retreat spa, while the park holds a large pool, tennis courts, shaded avenues and sun terraces. A complimentary shuttle runs to Florence and Siena, cars and Vespa scooters can be hired, and there is a helipad, three event rooms and an outdoor terrace; weddings and honeymoon programmes are arranged.

Location

The castle lies in Chianti, half an hour by car from both Florence and Siena. Florence International Airport is about 40 minutes away and Pisa International Airport roughly 1.5 hours.

Spa

COMO Shambhala Retreat has ten treatment rooms, a sauna, steam room, warm spa baths, an ice fountain, a beauty salon and a relaxation area. Facials, body treatments, massages and beauty therapies use Guinot products.

Sports & leisure

The heated 25-metre outdoor pool, open in summer, looks out over the Tuscan hills. There is a fitness centre, a yoga and Pilates studio and two floodlit tennis courts with equipment for hire. Cookery, cocktail and gelato classes, wine tastings, truffle hunts, stargazing, walks, bike rides and excursions fill the days, and several golf courses lie nearby.

For children

Babysitting is available on request.

Restaurants & bars

Dining draws on Tuscan tradition and produce from the hotel’s organic garden:

  • La Torre — seasonal Tuscan cuisine beneath the vaults of an old hall, with a summer terrace over the vineyards; one Michelin star
  • La Taverna — restaurant and bar in the 900-year-old former castle kitchen
  • Pavilion — summer Mediterranean restaurant on an open terrace facing hills, vineyards and olive groves
  • 12th-century wine cellar — tastings of Tuscan wines and olive oil

In-room dining is available.

Pets

Small dogs are welcome.
