About this hotel
General information
Belmond Hotel Caruso occupies an 11th-century palazzo built by the Marquis d’Afflitto at the highest point of Ravello, 300 metres above the Mediterranean. Shaded lanes and time-worn steps lead to an entrance guarded by stone lions; inside, the lobby keeps its carved columns and capitals, 18th-century frescoes, stucco work and patterned tiled floors. The surrounding landscape inspired Richard Wagner, Edvard Grieg, J. M. W. Turner and Joan Miró.
Its life as a hotel began in 1893, when Pantaleone Caruso rented five rooms in the palazzo and opened the Pensione Belvedere. In time it took over the whole building, and its golden book was signed by Prince Umberto of Savoy, Graham Greene, Tennessee Williams, Gina Lollobrigida, Greta Garbo and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Today there are 45 rooms, two restaurants and two bars, a boutique, a helipad and four event spaces for 80–300 guests; weddings and honeymoon programmes are arranged.
Location
The hotel sits on a hilltop in Ravello, 5 km from the Amalfi Coast, 50 km from Sorrento, 65 km from Naples international airport and 248 km from Rome. Positano, Amalfi, Pompeii, Paestum and Herculaneum are close by, and Capri is an easy boat trip away.
Spa
The Belvedere wellness centre offers a range of massage techniques, face and body treatments, manicures and pedicures, along with a solarium and a modern gym.
Sports & leisure
The grounds have a heated outdoor pool. Tennis courts are about 15 minutes away, and Golf Club Salerno and Volturno Golf are an hour’s drive. Guests also explore the nearby villages and take boat trips to Capri.
Restaurants & bars
Two restaurants and two bars are set around the pool and in the palazzo’s historic rooms.
- Belvedere Restaurant — open-air dining near the pool with local and European dishes
- Pool Restaurant — salads and traditionally made pizza
- Cocktail and Piano Bar — a first-floor bar with 18th-century frescoes and live piano music
- Poolside Bar — drinks and traditional southern Italian snacks in the open air
