Six Senses Shaharut

About this hotel

General information

Six Senses Shaharut is set into a rocky ledge above the Arava Valley in the far south of the Negev Desert. Its 60 suites and pool villas are laid along the slope so as to leave the natural terrain intact: walls are built from local stone and coloured with natural pigments, and much of the furniture and decor comes from artisans in the surrounding communities. Terraces look out over a desert that turns orange at sunset and fills with stars after dark.

Spread over nearly 19 hectares, the resort describes itself as the first hotel in Israel to earn LEED certification for green building. Drinking water is filtered and bottled in glass on site, food waste is composted for the organic garden and treated water irrigates a palm grove; the Earth Lab explains it all and hosts workshops in local crafts. It is a quiet desert retreat that welcomes children aged 10 and over, and every guest has a dedicated host who helps shape both active days and slow ones.

Location

The resort lies beside the small community of Shaharut in the Arava, looking across the valley to the Edom Mountains; Eilat on the Red Sea is about an hour's drive away. Transfers are arranged by the resort: the drive from Tel Aviv or Jerusalem takes around three and a half hours, or guests can take a 50-minute domestic flight from Tel Aviv to Eilat's airport, followed by a 45-minute drive. Helicopter flights from Tel Aviv can be booked in advance.

Spa

Six Senses Spa has three single and three double treatment rooms, a separate spa suite, saunas and hammams in the men's and women's areas, ice baths and a relaxation room. At the Alchemy Bar guests blend their own scrubs and masks from herbs, oils and botanicals. Signature treatments include a warm olive-oil massage with myrrh, frankincense and persimmon oils, a sound journey with gong, ocean drum and singing bowls, and a Dead Sea salt scrub and mud wrap. Yoga and sleep programmes and personal wellness screening complete the menu.

Sports & leisure

On site there is a 25-metre outdoor lap pool, an indoor pool, a fully equipped gym and a yoga studio facing the desert. Walking trails start at the door, and the resort offers mountain-bike rides, stargazing evenings and half-day 4x4 trips to the ruins of an ancient caravan route. Further afield it arranges excursions to the Dead Sea and Masada and to Mount Karkom, guided day trips to Petra in Jordan, visits to a kibbutz, Israeli wine tastings and workshops in desert cocktails and home-made vermouth from the organic garden.

For children

Younger guests have their own family programme: desert walks and organic-garden tours, an escape room, palm-weaving, incense- and hydrosol-making workshops, an art and artefacts trail, stargazing and film nights. Babysitting is available on request.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchen draws on Israeli and Mediterranean traditions and on seasonal produce from the resort's organic gardens and neighbouring kibbutzim. The restaurants are not kosher-certified, but pork and shellfish are not served.

  • Midian — the main restaurant for breakfast and dinner, with indoor and terrace seating over the desert, an open kitchen and a taboon (traditional clay oven) for modern takes on Israeli dishes
  • Edom View — an open-air spot facing the Edom Mountains for light bites and prime cuts from the grill
  • Pool Bar — poolside snacks, drinks, desserts and home-made ice cream
  • Jamillah Bar — Mediterranean tapas, afternoon tea, crafted cocktails and house-infused liqueurs, with music from a vinyl record collection
  • All-day in-villa dining and private dinners for two out in the desert
Swimming

There is no sea nearby: guests swim in the 25-metre outdoor lap pool, the 18-metre indoor pool at the spa and the private pools of the suites and villas. A bar serves the outdoor pool.

Rooms

The 60 suites and villas, most with their own pool, have generous terraces facing the Negev Desert, the Arava Valley and the Edom Mountains. Interiors are in warm sand tones with stone and local textiles, and beds follow the Six Senses sleep standard with handmade mattresses.

Each room has a private terrace, individually controlled air conditioning, a smart TV, a Marshall Bluetooth speaker, a minibar, coffee and tea, water bottled on site, a safe, a hairdryer, organic cotton bathrobes, a yoga mat, walking sticks and hats, and unlimited Wi-Fi.
