The Westbury

About this hotel

General information

The Westbury is a five-star hotel in the very heart of Dublin, set on quiet Balfe Street a few steps from Grafton Street, and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Its signature is the central staircase rising to The Gallery, a broad first-floor lounge hung with art and furnished with deep sofas, its windows looking down on Grafton Street — the setting for one of the city's best-known afternoon teas.

The interiors pair Irish and international design: a restful palette of creams and taupes, marble bathrooms with heated floors and original Irish artwork in rooms and suites. A 1930s mood runs through the house, from the greenery-filled WILDE restaurant to the Art Deco Sidecar cocktail bar. A dedicated guest relations team looks after arrivals and requests, while the concierge books tickets and plans days in the city.

Location

The hotel sits on Balfe Street in Dublin 2, just off Grafton Street, the city's main shopping street. St Stephen's Green, Trinity College, Dublin Castle, the National Gallery of Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland are a few streets away, as are the central theatres. Dublin Airport is about 35–40 minutes by car; guest relations can arrange a private transfer on request, and the Airlink and Aircoach buses run from the airport to St Stephen's Green and Grafton Street. Valet parking is available for guests arriving by car.

Sports & leisure

Runners have a Jogging Station at the hotel and the paths of St Stephen's Green close by. In season, a complimentary 75-minute walking tour led by Abbey Theatre guides leaves reception every Friday, taking in the Georgian quarter, the Gaiety and Abbey theatres, St Stephen's Green and the theatrical paintings of the National Gallery of Ireland. The concierge desk sells tickets for city tours, and the hotel's own Slice of the City guide suggests routes around Dublin.

For children

Babysitting can be arranged on request. The concierge helps plan family days out and books tickets in advance — for Dublin Zoo in Phoenix Park or the natural history branch of the National Museum of Ireland, for example.

Restaurants & bars

The hotel has two restaurants, a cocktail bar and a lounge for afternoon tea, with 24-hour room service.

  • WILDE — the main restaurant, 1930s in spirit and filled with greenery: Irish produce in well-loved local dishes and international classics, an extensive wine list, a terrace for aperitifs and small plates and a corner snug overlooking Grafton Street; breakfast is served here as a buffet and à la carte.
  • Balfes Bar & Brasserie — an all-day brasserie on Balfe Street with a zinc bar, an open kitchen and Josper grill, grass-fed steaks, fish and seafood, its own coffee blend, weekend brunch and a 20-seat terrace.
  • The Sidecar — an Art Deco cocktail bar, a modern take on a 1930s bar, pouring classics and signature cocktails and mixing martinis tableside from a dedicated trolley; adults only.
  • The Gallery — the first-floor lounge overlooking Grafton Street, for morning coffee and an afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and pastries, with champagne served from a trolley.
