The Merrion

About this hotel

General information

The Merrion occupies four listed Georgian townhouses of the 18th century in the very centre of Dublin. Restoration brought back their original character: rococo plasterwork, vaulted ceilings, marble fireplaces, period staircases and grand reception rooms. Behind the houses stands the contemporary Garden Wing, and between the two lie a pair of 18th-century-style gardens laid out with box hedging, water features, statuary and obelisks.

The hotel is known for its important private collection of 19th- and 20th-century Irish and European art, with works by Jack B. Yeats, Paul Henry, Sir John Lavery and Roderic O’Conor among its highlights. There are 142 rooms and suites, a spa with an 18-metre pool, and several restaurants and bars, Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud among them. The Merrion is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

Location

The hotel stands on Upper Merrion Street in central Dublin, beside Merrion Square, the National Gallery of Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland. St Stephen’s Green is a few minutes’ walk away and Grafton Street about five. Dublin Airport is 13 km away, and the hotel arranges transfers on request.

Spa

The Merrion Spa and Health Club has an Italian marble steam room, a sauna, a silent relaxation room and treatment rooms offering facials and body treatments with Biologique Recherche products. Physiotherapy is available, and the Merrion Hair Salon is on site. Treatments are for guests aged 18 and over.

Sports & leisure

At the heart of the spa is an 18-metre infinity pool lined in French limestone, with a trompe l’oeil mural at one end. The gym has cardio equipment and free weights, with personal training on request, and yoga classes run on two mornings a week. Guests can borrow bicycles, supplied with a helmet and rain mac and, if wished, a home-made picnic in the basket. A self-guided audio tour with a booklet leads through 20 works from the collection across the interiors and gardens.

Restaurants & bars

The hotel’s venues range from the grand reception rooms to the old vaults below.

  • Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud — haute cuisine, immaculately presented, with service in the French tradition
  • The Garden Room — a relaxed restaurant by the garden, with sharing dishes built on Irish produce, serving breakfast and all-day dining
  • The Cellar Bar — a pub in the 18th-century wine vaults, with snug corners
  • No. 23 — an intimate cocktail bar with a clubby feel
  • The Garden Terrace — open-air dining in the garden in season
  • Drawing Rooms — Georgian drawing rooms with log fires for afternoon tea; the Art Afternoon Tea features pastries inspired by paintings in the collection
