About this hotel
General information
Adare Manor is a 19th-century neo-Gothic mansion on the banks of the River Maigue, set within 340 hectares of parkland, woods and gardens. It was conceived as a ‘calendar house’: 365 leaded windows, 52 chimneys, 7 stone pillars and 4 towers stand for the days, weeks and seasons of the year, while the stonework is crowded with gargoyles, heraldry and carved creatures drawn from medieval bestiaries.
The great set piece inside is The Gallery, a 40-metre hall with a vaulted ceiling, stained glass and 17th-century Flemish choir stalls, modelled in spirit on the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Formal French gardens laid out in box parterres front the house, and a championship golf course follows the river. A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, the estate pairs period interiors with the scale of a resort: several restaurants, a spa, a leisure club with a pool and a long list of things to do in the grounds.
Location
The estate lies in the village of Adare, County Limerick, among thatched cottages, pubs and antique shops. Shannon Airport is about 30 minutes away by car, Cork Airport 90 minutes and Dublin Airport two and a half hours. It makes a good base for the Cliffs of Moher (about 1.5 hours), Killarney (1 hour 15 minutes) and the Dingle Peninsula (2 hours). Chauffeured airport transfers can be arranged, and the grounds have their own helipad.
Spa
The Spa at Adare Manor is an intimate retreat with five treatment rooms, private manicure and pedicure rooms and a relaxation lounge; its heated relaxation pool and infrared sauna are reserved for spa guests. Treatments are built around 111SKIN, with facial and body rituals ranging from sculpting and lifting work to cryotherapy, alongside aromatherapy, deep-tissue and hot-stone massages, the Coladh Sámh sleep ritual, detox body wraps and pregnancy treatments. The spa’s philosophy draws on ancient Celtic wisdom and the Ogham alphabet.
Sports & leisure
Much of the activity centres on the golf course and The Padel Club, a two-minute walk from the main house:
- an 18-hole parkland championship course, with The Carriage House as its clubhouse, a pro shop, a driving range and a putting green; play in season
- two indoor padel courts with coaching and equipment, and a golf simulation room with a TruGolf simulator, TrackMan 4 launch monitor and PuttView putting green
- a gym with floor-to-ceiling windows onto the woods, a studio for yoga and mat or reformer Pilates, and personal training
- fishing for brown and rainbow trout on the estate’s private lake from traditional Galway boats, guided by a ghillie; horse riding at an equestrian centre a 20-minute drive away
- clay pigeon shooting, archery and axe throwing in a timber lodge in the woods, with game shooting arranged at a nearby facility
- complimentary bicycles, the Woodland Walk and the walled gardens
- a private 45-minute horse-drawn carriage tour of the estate, an audio tour of the house and gardens, and an in-house cinema
- Irish whiskey, wine and sake tastings
For children
Younger guests have their own audio guide to the house and gardens for ages 6–12, a family film screening in the estate cinema every day and a fairy trail along the Woodland Walk. Falconry displays and the Irish gundog experience with trained Labradors are open to children from 3, archery from 6, and there is also an introduction to hurling.
Restaurants & bars
Dining is split between the historic rooms of the main house and The Carriage House:
- The Oak Room — seasonal tasting menus built on produce from Irish growers and fishermen, served in the oak-panelled former family dining room, with a cheese trolley and an extensive wine list
- The Carriage House — a grill restaurant for local produce, seafood and dry-aged Irish beef, with a cocktail bar, lounge and glazed terrace, three minutes’ walk from the main house
- Ōku — sushi and Japanese dishes made with Irish ingredients, beside the walled gardens; sake tastings
- The Gallery — breakfast for staying guests and afternoon tea with the house 1832 blend beneath the stained glass
- The Drawing Room — coffee and light meals by day, champagne and cocktails in the evening under a gilded ceiling overlooking the formal gardens
- The Tack Room — a bar in the former servants’ hall with a large fireplace, more than a hundred rare whiskeys, signature cocktails and beer from a local brewery; adults over 18 only
Swimming
The Padel Club has a heated 17-metre infinity-edge pool with floor-to-ceiling windows onto the woods, plus a vitality pool with built-in loungers, a steam room, a sauna and tropical rain showers. A separate 8 × 5 m relaxation pool under a skylight, looking over the River Maigue and the golf course, is reserved for spa guests.
