About this hotel
General information
Amanwana is a tented camp on a quiet, beach-fringed bay of Moyo Island, inside Moyo Satonda National Park. Jungle rises behind it, and the reefs of the Flores Sea lie just offshore. The name translates as "peaceful forest", and the camp was built without felling a single tree. Deer, macaques and wild boar live in the woods, sea eagles and ospreys work the coast, the endangered yellow-crested cockatoo can be spotted, and turtles and manta rays patrol the reefs.
Seventeen generous tents under high canvas sit along the shore and in the tropical greenery. Stays are full board, and include breakfast, lunch and dinner, in-tent refreshments and soft drinks, laundry, the transfer from Sumbawa airport and non-motorised watersports equipment. Days here turn on reef dives, forest trails, boat outings and dinners on the sand.
Location
The camp lies on Moyo Island off Sumbawa, in the Flores Sea. The usual route is a flight from Bali's international airport in Denpasar to Sumbawa airport (around 60 minutes), or via Lombok International Airport (40 minutes, then a 35-minute connection). An Aman representative meets guests on arrival, and a road transfer to a private jetty is followed by a 45-minute speedboat crossing of the Flores Sea.
Spa
The Spa at Amanwana blends Indonesian techniques with Eastern and Western practice. Treatments take place in two open-air double areas and a larger room with a sunken tub, each with an outdoor shower, in an air-conditioned spa tent with two massage beds, or in the guest's own tent. The menu covers Aman signature rituals and locally inspired treatments, a deep Tibetan Ku Nye massage with hot salt poultices, bonfire meditation and a floating sound bath at Mata Jitu waterfall. Yoga is held in the Yoga Shala, an open-air pavilion where the forest meets the shore.
Sports & leisure
Most routes start straight from the camp:
- a PADI dive centre for all levels, with courses and certification; dives in the bay and on three large reefs near Labuan Aji, 10–15 minutes by boat
- guided snorkelling on the reefs
- swimming with whale sharks in Saleh Bay, east of Moyo, with a guide from a local conservation group — a sunrise boat trip and a picnic breakfast
- kayaks, paddleboards and windsurfing
- deep-sea and traditional bottom fishing
- outrigger trips along the coast and to snorkelling spots, at sunrise or sunset, and night drifts under the stars
- treks through the forest and along sea cliffs, to a peninsula known for its sunsets and, with a guide, to a bat cave
- mountain-bike trails
- swimming in the spring-fed limestone pools of Mata Jitu waterfall
- picnics in forest glades, on the beach and in a secluded cove
- a day on Satonda Island: a 75-minute cruise, a jungle trek, snorkelling, kayaking on its salt-water lake and a picnic
- trail walks in Tambora National Park on Sumbawa
Restaurants & bars
Cooking leans on the day's catch, brought in straight from the fishing boats, on vegetables, fruit and herbs from the camp's own garden and on Indonesian flavours; menus are adapted to each guest.
- The Restaurant — simple, fresh cooking with views over the Flores Sea to Medang Island and the mountains of Sumbawa
- the bar — cocktails and a bar menu
- Sunset Point — sundowners on the volcanic ridge with an open horizon
- lantern-lit and campfire dinners on the beach, and a starlit dinner cruise in the bay
Swimming
The tents line the sandy beach of a calm bay, with reefs close to the shore. For more seclusion, guests can be dropped at a hidden cove with sun mattresses, snorkelling gear and a picnic.
