About this hotel
General information
Banyan Tree Bintan is an all-pool-villa resort on the hillsides above a secluded bay in the north of Bintan island. Its timber villas, built in Balinese style and raised on stilts, sit among old tropical rainforest, and their terraces look out across the sea. Below lies a private beach of white sand framed by coconut palms and granite boulders.
The resort is part of the Laguna Bintan coastal estate, which puts the Laguna Golf Bintan championship course on its doorstep. On site are a Banyan Tree Spa with hilltop treatment pavilions, three restaurants, a marine centre and a rock-edge pool high above the shore. The resort's Conservation Lab works with local communities on mangroves, sea turtles and the island's wider environment.
Location
The resort lies in the Lagoi resort area in the north of Bintan, the largest island of the Riau archipelago. From Singapore the route is a fast ferry from Singapore's Tanah Merah ferry terminal to Bintan's Bandar Bentan Telani terminal, about an hour, followed by a short drive. Tanjung Pinang, the capital of the Riau Islands, is about 60 km away (roughly 75 minutes by car), and a complimentary resort-area shuttle runs to the Plaza Lagoi shopping mall.
Spa
Banyan Tree Spa Bintan sits on a hilltop among ancient rocks and old-growth trees with views of the sea, its treatments given in traditional hut-style pavilions using local ingredients. The menu covers Balinese massage, Indonesian rituals with a floral bath and a Master Therapist Experience built on a detailed consultation; there are dedicated rooms for couples. Wellbeing sessions include sunrise yoga, sound healing with singing bowls and the breathwork-based Prana Awakening Flow, and the Banyan Tree Gallery sells body, bath and aromatherapy products.
Sports & leisure
Days here mix the sea, golf and the island itself:
- a marine centre for canoeing, kayaking, snorkelling and stand-up paddleboarding, open daily outside the monsoon season
- Laguna Golf Bintan, an 18-hole, par-72 course on 60 hectares of forest, natural wetland and coconut groves, with a signature 17th hole above the sea
- complimentary group and private yoga classes, plus fitness classes
- bicycle hire, nature trails and a guided walk from Laguna Bintan to a neighbouring village, recording wildlife sightings along the way
- seasonal sea turtle releases and mangrove planting at a nursery with the local community
- sunset cruises, beach volleyball and Indonesian cooking classes
- excursions: an hour by boat through the mangroves of the Sebung River (fireflies on the evening trip), the markets and shophouses of Tanjung Pinang, and a Buddhist temple with more than 500 stone arhat statues
For children
The Rangers Kids Club is at the neighbouring Angsana Bintan and takes children aged 4–10. It is open daily, with baking, face painting, crafts, local games and nature trails.
Restaurants & bars
The restaurants face the sea, and dinner can also be taken well away from them:
- Treetops — all-day Indonesian cooking overlooking the sea
- Saffron — Thai cuisine, dinner only
- The Cove — modern European dishes behind floor-to-ceiling windows onto the ocean
- Destination Dining — dinners on the seaside rocks with a personal chef and waiter, at the 17th hole of the golf course, an in-villa barbecue with a private chef, and an Indonesian feast on the beach by the marine centre
Swimming
The resort overlooks a secluded bay of white sand, coconut palms and boulders; the beach is private and home to the marine centre. There are two shared pools, one on the beach and one on a rock edge high above the coast, and every villa has a pool of its own.
