Hotel Tugu Lombok

About this hotel

General information

Hotel Tugu Lombok is a museum hotel on Sire beach, on the north-west coast of Lombok. Its pavilions take their cue from ancient temples, and the grounds between them hold hundreds of artworks and antiques — carved temple gates, reliefs, statues, old furniture — arranged so that sculpture and painting retell episodes of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana as you walk through the gardens. It belongs to Tugu Hotels, a privately owned collection of art hotels, each one devoted to the culture of its island.

Villas, suites and bungalows sit in traditional buildings a few steps from the sea, among gardens, lotus ponds and palms. The main restaurant shelters under a 15-metre thatched roof topped by a giant Lombok rooster visible far out to sea, while the spa occupies an open-air temple terrace facing the ocean. Guests can learn to cook local dishes, prepare jamu herbal tonics or follow how Lombok's pearls are cultivated. The gardens, beach and dining rooms host weddings, small celebrations and corporate retreats.

Location

The hotel lies on the long white sands of Sire beach near Tanjung, on Lombok's north-west coast, 15–20 minutes by boat from the Gili islands and facing sunrise over Mount Rinjani. Lombok itself sits east of Bali, about 20 minutes away by air or roughly 2.5 hours by speedboat.

Spa

Hening Swarga Spa is an open-air temple by the shore, scented with tropical flowers and incense. Its large treatment room, with nooks lit by oil lamps, has an extra-long bed on which couples are treated side by side, head to head, and a big jet bath that looks straight out to the ocean. Centuries-old temple reliefs line the space, and steps lead up to a top terrace among statues in the style of Java's ancient kingdoms, where yoga, meditation and full-moon dinners are held above a 180-degree ocean view. The hotel's teachers also lead yoga, meditation and breathing sessions for beginners and daily practitioners alike.

Sports & leisure

The hotel's programme covers the sea, the island and its crafts:

  • snorkelling and diving trips to the Gili islands, about 20 minutes away on the hotel's own boat, with a picnic lunch on board
  • a two-hour sunrise picnic breakfast aboard Naga Mesem, a traditional wooden boat with a dragon's head, cruising past the Gilis and the bays as the sun rises over Mount Rinjani
  • fishing with local fishermen in a small wooden outrigger, with the catch cooked for lunch or dinner
  • sunset rides through the village and rice fields in an antique horse-drawn bendi cart, on horseback or by bicycle
  • treks to waterfalls, including the 40-metre Tiu Pupus falls, and forest hikes over rocks and streams
  • a half-day tour of West Lombok's old palace gardens and craft markets
  • the 18-hole championship course of Lombok Golf Kosaido Country Club next door, with views of Mount Rinjani and the Gili islands
  • a Lombok cooking class that starts at a traditional market and ends with dinner in an open kitchen with wood-fired clay stoves, plus classes in jamu herbal drinks and pearl cultivation
Restaurants & bars

Meals can be taken anywhere on the grounds — in the garden, on the quiet beach or in a pavilion for two above a lotus pond, by torch and candlelight:

  • Kokok Pletok — the open-air main restaurant under a 15-metre thatched roof, overlooking the ocean and lotus ponds; international, Asian and Indonesian cooking
  • Gedong Gandrung — the second restaurant, a 'hall of love' dedicated to Rama and Sita of the Ramayana
  • Lara Djonggrang Bar — a traditional hut with century-old benches, a long antique teak bar, oil lamps and a brick-walled wine cellar; traditional tunes by day, lounge music in the evening
  • dining experiences: a sunrise picnic breakfast, a sunset dragon-boat cruise, full-moon barbecues, a moonlight spa dinner, the Babah Peranakan Dinner and the Grand Rijsttafel feast
Swimming

Every room is a few steps from the white sand of Sire beach, and the clear water in front of the hotel is good for swimming and snorkelling. Several villas and suites have their own pools, from a 7-metre black-stone plunge pool to the 15-metre seafront pool of the presidential suites.
