Labuan Bajo

TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Labuan Bajo

About this hotel

General information

TA’AKTANA spreads across 16 hectares between green hills and the Flores Sea, just outside Labuan Bajo. Its design takes its cue from the lingko, the spider-web rice fields of the Manggarai people, and the interiors draw on Manggarai craft, the cone-roofed houses of Wae Rebo village and the seafaring heritage of the Bajo. There are 70 places to stay: 45 junior suites and 25 villas, some of them set on stilts over the water.

Part of The Luxury Collection, the resort is shaped by attentive service: every villa has a round-the-clock butler, and at turndown a handcrafted traditional lantern appears in the room, like those that once lit paths between Manggarai villages. Each evening Nera Lounge holds a sunset ritual with a cocktail made from sopi, the local palm spirit. A private jetty, a dive centre, a spa modelled on coastal caves, an Olympic-sized pool and a kids' club make it an easy base for trips into Komodo National Park.

Location

The resort sits on Wae Rana beach near Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores, in East Nusa Tenggara — the gateway to Komodo National Park. Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo is about 2.5 km away; the hotel arranges airport transfers on request, as well as private car service. Guests can also arrive by sea, stepping straight onto the resort's own jetty.

Spa

Di’a Spa takes its cue from the Rangko and Batu Cermin caves, with walls in turquoise and stone tones and shapes that recall stalactites. Facilities include a steam room, a plunge pool, therapy baths, separate lounges for men and women and a private couples' suite with a whirlpool bath. The menu covers massages, scrubs made with local coffee and brown sugar, a traditional lulur ritual, Niance facials, scalp and hair treatments, manicures and pedicures.

Sports & leisure

Life here turns towards the water. Dives with TA’A Dive Center leave from the private jetty for sites scouted by the resort's own marine team; snorkelling and watercraft, including kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, are complimentary. The hotel arranges island-hopping by boat through Komodo National Park, with a guided visit to see the Komodo dragons, the viewpoint on Padar Island, Pink Beach and a picnic on a quiet shore.

On land there is a 24-hour fitness centre with classes, sunrise yoga by the sea and an early trek up a hill for the sunrise, plus outings to Batu Cermin cave, Melo village for the caci dance and local weavers, and Wae Rebo village. A weekly sopi masterclass and a fishing and cooking class — out on the water at dawn, then cooking the catch — complete the programme.

For children

The kids' club is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm and is complimentary for guests. Its activities draw on local traditions: Bajo-style canvas painting, seed planting, Manggarai storytelling, the rangku alu dance and more. The main pool has its own children's pool.

Restaurants & bars

Dining leans on local fishermen and farmers, with produce from Kebunku, the resort's own kitchen garden.

  • Leros — all-day restaurant with international dishes and flavours from across the Indonesian archipelago; breakfast is served here
  • Umasa — farm-to-table Indonesian cooking with seasonal menus and a signature rantang served in tiered tins
  • Taba — rooftop grill and bar with sea views
  • Maiga! — bar on the jetty with inventive cocktails inspired by the spice trade
  • Nera Lounge — tapas, small bites, cocktails, coffee and tea, and the nightly sunset ritual
  • Coffee Roastery — the resort's own roastery, working with beans grown on Flores
  • Pool Bar — cool drinks and light bites by the pool, looking out over the Flores Sea

In-room dining is available around the clock.

Swimming

The resort lies right on Wae Rana beach on the Flores Sea and has its own jetty, from which guests snorkel over the coral gardens. There are two outdoor pools: an Olympic-sized pool and the main resort pool with a swim-up bar, a children's area and a lifeguard on duty; towels are provided. The one- and two-bedroom villas and The Mansion have private pools.

Pets

Pets are not allowed.
