Plataran Komodo Resort & Spa

About this hotel

General information

Plataran Komodo Resort & Spa is tucked away on secluded Waecicu beach near Labuan Bajo, on the island of Flores. Its villas sit between the sand and a green hillside that looks out to Bidadari Island and the Flores Sea. It is a small resort of 18 residences — from one-bedroom villas to two-bedroom homes with their own pools — where traditional Indonesian décor and handcrafted detail meet contemporary comfort.

The resort belongs to Plataran, an Indonesian collection that shapes its hotels around nature and local culture. Life here is about the sea: snorkelling straight off the shore in the resort's own underwater garden, days out among the islands of Komodo National Park and sunset from a lookout on the hill. The resort also plants coral with its guests and supports the school in the neighbouring village of Rangko.

Location

The resort lies on Waecicu beach near Labuan Bajo, on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, about 10 minutes by boat from town. Labuan Bajo is the gateway to Komodo National Park: Rinca and Komodo islands, Padar Island and Pink Beach are one to two hours away by sea. The resort has its own jetty and a helipad for arrivals and departures.

Spa

Padma Spa takes its name from the lotus flower. The menu covers massages, facials and detox programmes built on local herbs and natural ingredients, and hatha yoga sessions are held too.

Sports & leisure

Plataran Water World offers snorkelling, canoes and boogie boards right by the villas, and the glass-walled gym pavilion, with cardio and strength equipment, looks out over Waecicu beach. Yoga is held on the beach, and 200 steps lead up to the Plataran Hill lookout, where guests gather for sunset and breakfast is laid out at dawn.

  • day trips by boat among the islands of Komodo National Park, snorkelling off Kelor Island and other reefs
  • guided visits to Komodo National Park: Rinca and Komodo islands, home of the Komodo dragon, a hike on Padar Island, Pink Beach and Kalong Island
  • a picnic and water sports on a secluded island
  • trips to the Cunca Lolos and Cunca Plias waterfalls, the Batu Cermin and Rangko caves and a fishing village
  • a cooking class with a visit to the local market
  • cultural outings to Todo village and the Cancar rice fields, to Wae Rebo village and into Manggarai culture
  • a bicycle ride to the school in Rangko village to deliver books to its pupils, and coral planting
Restaurants & bars

Xanadu, an open-air restaurant and bar, serves Indonesian and Asian dishes and seafood from the day's catch from morning until late evening. The resort also sets up beach barbecues, candlelit dinners under the stars, a private dinner on the jetty with a butler, a bonfire dinner with an Indonesian feast of many small dishes and a sunrise breakfast on the hill.

Swimming

Waecicu beach lies in front of the resort, and the main pool sits right beside the sand. Along the shore, the Sea Garden underwater park — 200 m long and 20 m wide, with coral, marine life and submerged sculptures — makes for snorkelling without taking a boat. The Presidential Pool, Duplex Pool and Hanging Pool residences and Founder's Home have private pools.
