About this hotel
General information
Plataran Borobudur Resort & Spa sits in the hills above the village of Tanjungan in Central Java, looking straight across to Borobudur. Teak forest, rice fields, the Menoreh Hills and the outlines of Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu surround it, and from the resort's wooden viewing deck the sun rises over the temple with nothing in the way. It is a small villa resort of 21 villas, some in the traditional Javanese joglo style and some contemporary, and almost every one has its own pool.
The resort belongs to Plataran, an Indonesian collection whose hotels are built around cultural heritage and landscape. Life here turns on mornings facing Borobudur, cooking with produce from the resort's own organic garden, Javanese crafts and the Rahita wellness sanctuary, with yoga, meditation and spa rituals based on local herbs.
Location
The resort is in Tanjungan village in the Borobudur district of Magelang regency, Central Java, a five-minute drive from Borobudur temple. Yogyakarta International Airport is about an hour and a half away by car; the resort arranges airport transfers, and guests are driven to the temple free of charge.
Spa
Rahita Wellness Sanctuary is Plataran's wellness concept, rooted in Indonesian tradition: yoga, meditation, spa rituals and restorative programmes, including a half-day circuit of heat, cold and time in water. It includes an indoor pool, a gym and Padma Spa (open daily 9 am – 9 pm), with massages, facials and detox programmes based on local herbs and natural ingredients; one ritual is a warm bath of herbs and flowers.
Sports & leisure
The resort arranges outings and classes built around the culture and countryside of Central Java:
- sunrise or sunset visits to Borobudur and tours of other Central Javanese temples
- walks and jeep rides through the countryside and nearby villages
- cycling through the rice fields and river rafting
- batik, Javanese dance, jamu-making and Javanese cooking classes
- pottery in Klipoh village, where local potters teach their traditional technique
- a drive along country roads in a retro classic car, with photo stops and a finish at a joglo home with crafts, storytelling and traditional snacks
- a gym, yoga in a hilltop pavilion facing the Menoreh Hills and a gentle morning exercise programme for guests aged 50 and over
For children
Children have the Plataran Junior programme of creative play and learning activities, and the Plataran Carnaval Playground with traditional Indonesian fairground rides: a swinging boat, a little train, a Ferris wheel, a chair swing, a carousel of horses and spinning cups. Babysitting is available on request.
Restaurants & bars
Javanese and international dishes are cooked with produce from the resort's own organic garden:
- Tiga Dari Borobudur — an indoor dining room with uninterrupted views of Borobudur; Tiga Dari Rooftop above it hosts sunrise breakfasts with stories about the temple, and pandan-leaf sandals and batik sarongs are provided for guests who need them
- Enam Langit by Plataran — Indonesian and international dishes facing six Javanese mountains, Merapi and Merbabu among them, from sunrise to sunset
- Patio Colonial House — the Patio Deck terrace and the Patio Colonial dining room, both facing Borobudur, with classic Indonesian and international dishes from the garden
- The Kastil — an intimate room by reservation only, for an Indonesian rice-table feast of many dishes or a dinner for two served by a private butler
- Langit Borobudur — a viewing deck opposite the temple for sunrise breakfast and private dinners
- Prego Borobudur — Italian cooking in a private garden pavilion with a library
- Pawon Residence — a joglo-style kitchen where the chef cooks dishes of Magelang in front of guests
Candlelit dinners under the open sky can also be arranged.
