Amanjiwo

About this hotel

General information

Amanjiwo sits among the rice fields of Central Java on a hillside facing Borobudur, the largest Buddhist monument in the world. Its architecture echoes the temple itself: from a lofty central rotunda, stone pavilions on raised terrazzo platforms fan out in two gentle crescents, while the grounds step down in terraces to a 40-metre pool. The Menoreh Hills and the volcanic peaks of Merapi and Merbabu frame the horizon.

Javanese culture sets the pace. Traditional afternoon tea is served every day in the rotunda to gamelan music and dance, the resort's anthropologist gives lectures and leads visits to ancient temples, and the spa draws on local rituals of beauty and cleansing. Every stay includes return airport transfers, breakfast, afternoon tea, morning yoga on alternate days, non-alcoholic in-room refreshments, cultural lectures and a scheduled shuttle around the Borobudur area, booked in advance.

Location

The resort lies in the Borobudur area of Magelang regency, Central Java, a few minutes from the temple. Yogyakarta International Airport is about a 90-minute drive away and Solo airport about two hours; transfers from Yogyakarta are provided for every guest. Direct flights reach Yogyakarta from Jakarta (about an hour), Bali (an hour and a half), Singapore and Kuala Lumpur (2 hr 15 min each). The city of Yogyakarta is less than an hour's drive.

Spa

Wellness is built on traditional Javanese rituals of beauty and healing, with a spa suite holding a double treatment room and an open-air balé for relaxation. Signature treatments include Mandi Lulur, the old Javanese bridal ritual of massage, a turmeric, honey and rice mask, exfoliation and a warm herbal bath; Lulur Hitam, its counterpart with a black rice and coffee scrub; and the Aman Advanced Facial with Japan's Essential Skin line. Hatha and Ashtanga yoga (private sessions too), Javanese meditation and purification rites complete the menu — Tolak Balak with jamu herbal drink, and a morning Ruwatan procession by the Progo River with a shadow-puppet performance.

Sports & leisure

Beyond the 40-metre pool, the gym and yoga, the resort arranges outings and classes rooted in Java's history and crafts:

  • sunrise at Borobudur: a pre-dawn transfer, a guest entrance with a shorter walk to the temple and a climb to the upper terraces with a certified guide
  • lectures and temple visits with the resort's anthropologist — Mendut, Pawon, Prambanan and other ancient sanctuaries
  • treks on the flanks of Mount Merapi and through the Menoreh Hills, past villages, clove plantations and little-known temples
  • electric-bike rides and tailor-made tours by car
  • lessons in the old Javanese aksara script and jemparingan, traditional seated Javanese archery
  • trips to Yogyakarta: the silversmiths' quarter of Kotagede, the Sonobudoyo Museum with evening wayang kulit shadow puppetry, workshops in wayang and lurik striped weaving, and the Kraton palace complex
  • Javanese cooking classes at Joglo Sawah
Restaurants & bars

The kitchen works with produce from the resort's own organic garden and nearby farms:

  • The Restaurant & Bar — a colonnaded dining room under the rotunda with a terrace over rice fields, Borobudur and the volcanoes; Indonesian and international dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a daily-changing Javanese Makan Malam tasting dinner and cocktails built on lemongrass, nutmeg and galangal
  • The Pool Terrace — a semi-circular colonnaded terrace above the pool, for resort guests only: light lunches, drinks and snacks, Indonesian and international; a poolside barbecue dinner with a private chef, dance and gamelan can be arranged
  • Joglo Sawah — an open-air joglo pavilion facing rice fields and volcanoes: contemporary Indonesian cooking with local ingredients, Javanese cooking classes and a seven-course Chef's Table with optional wine pairing
  • private dining: a Javanese dinner with a wayang performance and gamelan, a home-cooked dinner with a Javanese family beside Pawon temple, an early breakfast in the rice fields facing Merapi and Merbabu, a picnic or candlelit dinner in a hilltop pavilion above the Progo River, and a dinner with a Ramayana dance performance
Swimming

The 40-metre main pool lies at the foot of the terraced grounds, lined with sun loungers and overlooked by The Pool Terrace, with views across lawns, rice paddies and banyan trees. Three pavilion categories have private six-metre pools, and the Dalem Jiwo villa has a 15-metre pool of Javanese stone.

Rooms

Six categories of 243 m² pavilions are set in two crescents around the rotunda, differing in outlook — Borobudur, the Menoreh Hills and rice paddies, or the garden — and in whether they have a private pool. The two-bedroom Dalem Jiwo villa of 1,200 m² stands apart.
