About this hotel
General information
Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve sits among rainforest and rice fields on the banks of the Ayung River, a few minutes from the historic centre of Ubud. In Sanskrit mandapa means temple, and the resort’s architecture takes ancient Indonesian temples as its model. Guests are welcomed with the sound of a traditional Balinese gong and a local cooling drink before a personal butler shows them to a suite or pool villa.
Days here are built around Balinese cooking, a spa above the river, yoga, swimming with views of the rice terraces and an introduction to island culture, with programmes for adults and for children at the Mini Explorers club. There are two function rooms for up to 40 guests, business services, concierge and laundry; weddings and honeymoon programmes can be arranged.
Location
The resort lies beside the Ayung River, 10 minutes by car from central Ubud, 35 minutes from Sanur and about an hour from Kuta, Seminyak and Nusa Dua. Ngurah Rai International Airport is around an hour away.
Spa
Mandapa Spa & Wellness is built above the Ayung River. It has an outdoor pool with a hydro-massage area and river views, a sauna, steam room, ice fountain, hydro-massage showers, a 24-hour gym, a yoga studio and eight treatment rooms, four of them for couples. Programmes follow six themes — Balinese spa, cleansing, nutrition, alternative therapy, body therapy and healing — and therapists combine ancient Balinese techniques, modern Western methods, local natural ingredients and ESPA products.
Sports & leisure
The heated outdoor pool looks out over the rice fields, and yoga takes place in a pavilion facing the river. Cycling (bikes are available to hire), rafting, local cooking lessons, cultural programmes and excursions are offered.
For children
The Mini Explorers club, for children aged five and over, is an introduction to Balinese culture: jungle yoga and fitness, rice-field walks and treasure hunts, lessons with Balinese healers, painting with plant dyes, chocolate making, organic gardening, night-time nature walks and flying Balinese kites. Babysitting can be arranged on request.
