Amandari

About this hotel

General information

Amandari is laid out like a traditional Balinese village, its pavilions and villas set in dense tropical greenery above cascading rice terraces and the valley of the sacred Ayung River. The valley is in view from almost everywhere on the property, and most villas have their own pool.

The whole idea draws on the island’s culture — from the architecture and interiors to the local cooking, spa rituals rooted in Balinese practice and programmes that open up the island’s traditions. A library, boutique, concierge and laundry service are on hand, along with Wi-Fi and parking; the resort also arranges weddings and offers dedicated honeymoon programmes.

Location

The resort lies in central Bali, in the village of Kedewatan above the Ayung River valley, about 10 minutes by car from the centre of Ubud. The drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar takes around an hour and a half.

Spa

The spa has a sauna, steam room, beauty salon, relaxation area and two treatment pavilions surrounded by lotus ponds. Face and body treatments draw on Balinese tradition, local natural ingredients and Aman Essential Skin products, and there are wellness programmes inspired by the island’s spiritual practices.

Sports & leisure

The 28-metre outdoor pool looks out over the valley. The gym, with modern equipment, faces a lotus pond, and there is a floodlit tennis court. Yoga and meditation, cycling and walks, rafting on the Ayung River, cultural programmes and excursions are all offered; bicycles and tennis equipment can be hired.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurant, with an open terrace above the landscaped pool and the Ayung valley, serves Balinese, Indonesian and international dishes, and dinner is accompanied by gamelan music. The Terrace bar by the pool offers cold drinks, cocktails made with local ingredients and afternoon tea with pastries. In-villa and private dining are available.

Rooms

Accommodation is divided between pavilions and villas. Interiors follow Balinese tradition — steep thatched roofs, bamboo and teak, walled garden courtyards with stone paths, work by local craftsmen — and terraces look over rainforest, rice terraces and the Ayung valley.
