About this hotel
General information
Umaid Bhawan Palace rises on a hill above Jodhpur, Rajasthan's Blue City, in 26 acres of gardens. Built of golden sandstone and completed in the 1940s, it is one of India's most striking Art Deco buildings, with arcades, inner courtyards, the sweeping Baradari Lawns and a lobby beneath a 45 m dome.
There are 71 rooms – 26 rooms and 45 suites – all in the Art Deco style, looking out over the gardens, the pool, the city or Mehrangarh Fort. Butlers look after guests; the palace has the J Wellness Circle spa, restaurants serving Rajasthani and international food, and an underground indoor pool, the Zodiac, lined with handmade tiles and frescoes. Days unfold slowly: breakfast in the garden, afternoon tea, candlelit dinners on the lawns.
Location
The palace stands on high ground above the old city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, with views across the city to Mehrangarh Fort. Jodhpur airport is about 4.5 km away, roughly 15 minutes by car, and the hotel arranges airport pick-ups and drop-offs on request (ideally 24 hours before arrival). A shuttle runs to the city centre, the concierge books chauffeur-driven cars for trips around the city and beyond, and there is a helipad on the grounds.
Spa
J Wellness Circle offers Indian and international therapies built on local natural ingredients and the spa's own oils. Signatures include Vishrama, a deep massage with hot compresses of Indian herbs, the vigorous Pehlwān Mālish in the tradition of Indian wrestlers, Chandana with sandalwood paste and aloe vera, and Sammatva, a yoga-based treatment. The menu also covers Indian aromatherapy, Pada Mardana foot massage, Ventoz cupping, champi head massage, the Drishti eye treatment, the herbal Posha scrub and a signature facial, and an instructor leads yoga and meditation sessions.
Sports & leisure
There is a large outdoor pool, the underground indoor Zodiac Pool, a 24-hour fitness centre, a yoga instructor and a jogging track through the gardens. Guests play squash, tennis and badminton, and the games room has billiards, chess, table tennis, carrom and foosball. The hotel arranges tours of the palace and its museum, horse riding at the polo ground, horse-drawn carriage rides, kite flying, Chef's Studio cooking demonstrations and mocktail-making classes. The concierge plans half-day and full-day outings around the city, including Mehrangarh Fort, and trips into the Thar Desert, and there is evening entertainment.
For children
Children have a play area and interactive cookie-making sessions where young chefs decorate their own treats, and a babysitter is available on the premises.
Restaurants & bars
The palace has two restaurants and a bar, and private dinners with their own menus can be set up in quiet corners of the palace and gardens.
- Risala – Indian and Rajasthani cuisine with views of the gardens, the city and Mehrangarh Fort, for breakfast, lunch and dinner;
- Pillars – an open-air café on a colonnaded terrace, looking over the gardens and the city;
- Trophy Bar – wines, cocktails, cigars and finger food;
- Baradari Dining – dinner by candle and torchlight on the Baradari Lawns, facing the palace;
- a champagne breakfast in the bougainvillea garden, afternoon high tea and dinner by the pool under a private canopy.
