About this hotel
General information
Taj Lake Palace covers the whole of a small island in the middle of Lake Pichola in Udaipur: an 18th-century white-marble palace, built as a summer residence, that appears to float on the water. The building keeps the hallmarks of Mewari architecture – cupolas, carved jharokha balconies, inner courtyards and thekri inlay of glass and mirror – and its terraces look out over the lake, the hills and the city.
There are 65 rooms and 18 suites, each furnished differently with silks, velvet, fine rugs, teak and antique objets d'art. Butlers are on hand around the clock, and the palace restaurants are open to resident guests only. The island can be reached only by boat, so the arrival itself becomes part of the stay.
Location
The palace sits on its island in Lake Pichola, at the heart of Udaipur in Rajasthan. A boat from the jetty at the City Palace complex crosses to it in about five minutes. Udaipur airport is roughly 50 minutes away by road, and the hotel arranges airport pick-ups and drop-offs on request. The City Palace is a kilometre away and reachable by the hotel's own boat; Jagdish Temple is 1.5 km away.
Spa
J Wellness Circle offers Indian and international therapies that combine Ayurvedic principles with modern techniques. The menu runs from signature massages – including a vigorous traditional Indian wrestlers' massage – to champi head massage, foot massage, Indian aromatherapy with the spa's own oils, scrubs and wraps made from fruit, vegetables and herbs, and facials, alongside yoga and meditation sessions. A separate experience takes place on a boat modelled on a traditional barge, with a double treatment suite, relaxation lounge, steam room and shower, soaking pool and dining area on board.
Sports & leisure
There is an outdoor heated swimming pool, a modern fitness centre and a yoga instructor. The palace's in-house historians lead tours of the building and its architecture, while the concierge and butlers plan half-day and full-day outings around Udaipur, including drives through the city in a vintage car. There is evening entertainment and a games room.
Restaurants & bars
The restaurants are reserved for resident guests; breakfast can be served in the room, and the butler can arrange a private dinner under the stars.
- Neel Kamal – Indian cooking with Rajasthani dishes and North-West Frontier recipes, dinner only;
- Bhairo – contemporary European cuisine on the palace rooftop, with views across the lake, dinner only;
- Jharokha – all-day dining with Asian dishes and American classics;
- Amrit Sagar – a bar for aperitifs, cocktails and canapés;
- Gangaur – candlelit dinners aboard a hand-oared barge some 150 years old.
Swimming
There is no beach; the island has an outdoor heated swimming pool.
