Six Senses Fort Barwara

About this hotel

General information

Six Senses Fort Barwara occupies a 14th-century fort above a lake in the village of Barwara, surrounded by mustard fields, farmland and the rugged hills of Rajasthan. Two palaces and two temples survive within the walls; across the water a temple sits high on a hill, and the palace domes rise above the fields. The restoration used traditional Rajasthani building techniques, with rainwater tanks and solar panels worked quietly into the historic masonry.

There are 48 suites in a contemporary Rajasthani style, where old walls meet discreet technology and unexpected artwork. Each guest is looked after by a GEM (Guest Experience Maker), who shapes the day from a dawn safari to dinner on the ramparts. Only native plants are used in the grounds, the forest to the east is being rewilded, and the lake is cared for together with the village. The resort is open all year: the cool Rajasthani winter runs from October to April, the hot summer from May to September.

Location

The fort stands in the village of Barwara in Rajasthan, 30 minutes by road from Ranthambore National Park and Sawai Madhopur railway station. Jaipur is 2.5 hours away by car and Delhi's international airport about four hours; the flight from Delhi to Jaipur takes 40 minutes and the train from Delhi to Sawai Madhopur three and a half hours. A host meets guests at Jaipur airport for the drive in a hybrid SUV with Wi-Fi and refreshments, while arrivals at Sawai Madhopur station travel on in an electric SUV; transfers are arranged in advance at an extra charge. Private charter planes or helicopters from Delhi can be organised for groups of four to six.

Spa

Six Senses Spa and its fitness centre fill 2,800 m² of historic buildings within the walls. There is one single treatment room, three couples' suites and two Ayurveda rooms, along with a meditation hall, an aerial yoga pavilion, a nail bar, a boutique, steam room, sauna, tepidarium, Swedana herbal steam, a cool pool and a still pool; the wet facilities are complimentary for guests aged 16 and over. The menu runs from the Sleep, Discover Yoga, Fitness and Ayurvedic Rejuvenation programmes to skin analysis, compression therapy, a gong and singing-bowl sound journey and the Tiger's Eye massage, which works with the crystal alongside stretches and breathwork. At the Alchemy Bar guests blend their own scrubs and masks from local oils, clays and herbs.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens combine Rajasthani and pan-Indian cooking with international touches, using produce from the resort's organic gardens and from farmers in nearby villages:

  • The Cortile — the main restaurant in a leafy 14th-century courtyard, from Indian comfort food to fresh salads, with a fire pit in the evenings
  • The Rajawat Room — a library bar for classic and creative cocktails, fine whiskies and light bites by the fireplace
  • Rani Bagh — a poolside grill cooking seasonal produce over an open flame
  • Tibari — slow, unhurried dinners at dusk looking across to the temple above the lake
  • Wine Cellar — tastings of Indian wines paired with local artisan cheeses
  • Private dining around the fort, from its rooftops to tables under the stars

In-suite dining is available around the clock.

The fort has a large central outdoor pool with poolside service and an indoor pool, plus a separate kids' pool.
