Amanbagh

About this hotel

General information

Amanbagh is an Aman resort in the Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan, a garden oasis of fruit trees, palms and flowering shrubs set against a stark, arid landscape. Its pavilions follow Mughal-style architecture, with rose-tinted cupolas, vaulted entrances, sandstone colonnades, carved stone balconies with latticework and carved wooden screens. Suites and pavilions have soaring domed ceilings, and each comes with its own terrace or courtyard.

The countryside around holds ancient forts, the ruins of deserted towns and working villages, explored by Jeep, bicycle, camel or horse. Vegetables and herbs for the kitchen come from the resort’s organic garden, while a separate herbal garden grows plants used in its Ayurvedic treatments. Stays include daily breakfast and afternoon tea, a morning group yoga session, a guided morning walk and a tour of the organic vegetable garden.

Location

The resort lies near the village of Ajabgarh in Alwar district, deep in the Aravalli Hills, about 45 minutes by car from Sariska Tiger Reserve. The nearest airport is Jaipur, roughly 90 minutes to two hours away by car, and Delhi’s international airport is about three and a half hours by road. From Delhi the journey can also be made by train or by helicopter, as the resort has its own heliport. The concierge team arranges transfers.

Spa

Aman Spa occupies a domed pavilion in the gardens. Its menu covers massages, facials, body polishes and wraps, alongside Ayurvedic treatments such as Abhyanga, a warm herbal-oil massage performed by two therapists. The signature massage blends Swedish and deep-tissue techniques and opens with a crystal ritual and sound therapy. The resort’s Ayurvedic practitioner designs tailored multi-day Wellness Immersions of at least four nights, and there is a fitness centre as well as private yoga and meditation in the gardens and at temples nearby.

Sports & leisure

The resort leads walks and outings into the surrounding hills:

  • a daily morning group yoga session, plus private sunrise hatha yoga and meditation at a deserted hilltop fort
  • daily guided morning walks and tours of the organic vegetable garden and herbal garden
  • outings into rural Rajasthan by Jeep, bicycle, camel or on rare Marwari horses, with chai in the villages and herds returning home at sunset
  • guided visits to Bhangarh, an abandoned 17th-century town of palaces, temples, pools and bazaars set among lawns and giant ficus trees
  • a walk through a gorge to Somsagar Lake, with a picnic on the shore and an onward hike to a village in the valley above
  • Sariska Tiger Reserve, 45 minutes by car, home to tigers, wildcats, caracals and sambar deer
  • a day in Jaipur with a personal guide for carpets, textiles, silver and antiques
  • Indian cooking classes in the Gwaadi
  • a 33-metre pool and a fitness centre
Restaurants & bars

The kitchen cooks North Indian, Rajasthani and Ayurvedic dishes from local recipes, alongside international food, with much of the produce from the resort’s own organic garden.

  • Restaurant – a dining room with tall arched windows and a colonnaded terrace; masala dosa at breakfast, a Rajasthani thali at dinner
  • Bar – cocktails
  • Gwaadi – an open courtyard with earthen walls in the gardens, for private dinners and hands-on cooking classes with a chef
  • Rooftop Chhatri – a chhatri pavilion on the roof of the main building for breakfast, lunch or dinner above the treetops
  • Chhatri Dinner – a multi-course dinner in an ancient stone chhatri lit by hundreds of diya lamps, with live music
  • Jhilmil Bada – a mud-plastered platform hidden in tall grass at the far end of the grounds, for dinner or cocktails
  • Pool Pavilion Dinner – a private dinner in a Pool Pavilion with flower rangolis, diya lamps and traditional Indian music
  • Breakfast or lunch at Bhangarh – a picnic in an open-sided stone chhatri overlooking the countryside
  • Private dining with a personal chef and waiter – breakfast by Somsagar Lake, lunch in a chhatri above the Ajabgarh Valley or dinner on the Polo Lawn among a thousand candles
