Aman-i-Khas

About this hotel

General information

Aman-i-Khas is a small tented camp on the edge of Ranthambore National Park, set among the Aravalli Hills in rural Rajasthan. Its generous tents, with hardwood and canvas walls, stand well apart in a green garden, and white cotton drapes divide their living, sleeping and bathing spaces in the Mughal manner. Each tent is looked after by its own butler.

Safaris set the pace: twice a day Jeeps head into the park in search of wild tigers, and the hours between drives belong to the spa, a pool modelled on the region’s ancient stepwells and long lunches in the garden. In the evening the camp gathers around the central fire pit. Stays include full board, a daily morning group yoga session and butler service. The camp is seasonal and, according to Aman, closes from June to September.

Location

The camp lies in the village of Sherpur-Khiljipur near Sawai Madhopur, right on the threshold of Ranthambore National Park. The nearest airport is Jaipur, about 180 km or a three-hour drive away, while Delhi’s international airport is roughly four and a half hours by road. From Delhi guests can also take a four- to six-hour train ride with an Aman butler to Sawai Madhopur, followed by a 20-minute drive, or fly to Jaipur in an hour and continue by car for three hours. The camp’s concierge team arranges transfers.

Spa

The heated and air-conditioned Spa Tent is built around a small fountain and holds two double treatment rooms. Treatments draw on Ayurveda – among them Abhyanga, a warm herbal-oil massage performed by two therapists, and an Ayurvedic full-body massage with warm oil – alongside other massages, scrubs, wraps and baths. After a safari, an aromatic bath with fresh herbs from the camp’s organic garden can be drawn in the tent.

Sports & leisure

Beyond the park drives, the camp’s guides lead the way into rural Rajasthan:

  • twice-daily safaris in open-top Jeeps with an expert wildlife guide, just after sunrise and in the late afternoon; the park is home to tigers, leopards, jackals, crocodiles, sambar deer and some 300 bird species
  • camel safaris around the park’s outskirts, looking out for foxes, deer and antelope
  • horse rides on Marwari horses
  • Ranthambore Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inside the park, and the palace ruins of Khandar Fort on a hill 300 m above the plains, each followed by a picnic
  • a trek up a steep goat track to Khandar Fort, about 90 minutes by car from camp
  • a Chambal River cruise with a naturalist, with birds, water turtles and, with luck, the gharial
  • birdwatching along the Banas riverbed, two hours away by Jeep, in the dry season
  • daily yoga and meditation, plus private sessions in secluded spots, including Ranthambore Fort
  • an outdoor gym under the trees, with equipment made together with local artisans
  • an open-air traditional Indian shave and demonstrations of henna art
Restaurants & bars

The kitchen cooks Indian dishes, lighter takes on the classics and international food, with most vegetables and herbs from the camp’s organic garden.

  • Dining Tent – a long communal table, smaller tables and a terrace; Indian cooking, Rajasthani thalis included, and international dishes
  • Fire pit – informal meals and drinks around the fire at the heart of the camp, with views of the forest
  • Lounge Tent – books, board games and a small shop of local crafts
  • Machan Dining – a private dinner on a machan platform about 6 m above the forest, cooked over an open fire
  • Organic Farm Dinner – a private four-course dinner in a hut on the camp’s organic farm
  • picnics on safari or at the nearby forts, private bush dinners and, in the guava harvest season, breakfast in a guava orchard after the morning drive
  • home-style cooking demonstrations by the lake, around a charcoal-fired clay oven
Swimming

The main pool is modelled on the ancient stepwells of the region and framed by a sunny terrace with loungers, shaded by a grove of trees. The Tented Pool Pavilion and Grand Tented Pool Pavilion each have a private pool.
