The Oberoi, Mumbai

About this hotel

General information

The Oberoi, Mumbai rises above Marine Drive at Nariman Point in the south of the city. By day its windows fill with the Arabian Sea; after sunset they look onto the glittering crescent of the bay that Mumbai calls the Queen's Necklace. The hotel has 237 rooms and suites, all generously sized, with wall-to-wall windows facing the ocean, the bay or the city.

Life centres on a light-filled atrium lobby with a signature red piano that hosts live music. Around it are Fenix for international dining, the modern Indian restaurant Ziya, The Eau Bar with its terrace over the sea and The Champagne Lounge for afternoon tea. Suites come with butler service, and the hotel takes particular care of women travelling alone. Around half of its daily electricity comes from renewable sources through a solar power partnership.

Location

The hotel stands on Marine Drive at Nariman Point, the business and cultural quarter of south Mumbai, close to galleries, theatres and shops. The Gateway of India is about 2 km away and the National Centre for the Performing Arts a short drive. Mumbai airport is 25 km away, around an hour by car; the hotel arranges airport transfers on request.

Spa

The Oberoi Spa is reserved for resident guests, and treatments should be requested at least 24 hours ahead. Beauty salon services are available on request.

Sports & leisure

The temperature-controlled outdoor pool, 18 m long, sits in a private courtyard that turns into a setting for candle-lit poolside dinners in the evening, with sunset cocktails and a menu built around the guests. The hotel's experiences lead out into the city:

  • a two-hour guided walk past the High Court, the university, the clock tower and other architectural landmarks of the old city, ending at the great Victorian-era railway terminus;
  • a chauffeur-driven art tour of the galleries of Kala Ghoda, the National Gallery of Modern Art among them;
  • Mumbai at Dawn — the flower market, the milk and newspaper sellers at the old terminus and the fish auction at the docks, rounded off with Mumbai-style chai and a snack;
  • the Spice Trail with an Oberoi chef through Lalbaug market, the fruit and vegetable halls and Mirchi Galli, the spice alley;
  • a hands-on Indian cooking lesson with an Oberoi chef, followed by dinner.

A luxury shopping arcade completes the picture.

For children

Junior Chef is a hands-on cookie-making session for young guests, run by the hotel's chefs — children can follow a classic recipe or invent their own.

Restaurants & bars

Most of the restaurants and bars look out to sea, and the cooking moves between international and Indian kitchens.

  • Fenix — international all-day restaurant opening onto the atrium lobby, with European and Japanese dishes, Indian classics, a robatayaki grill and sushi bar cooking in front of guests, breakfasts and Sunday brunch;
  • Ziya — modern Indian cuisine that reworks classic dishes, à la carte or a tasting menu, with ocean views;
  • The Eau Bar — Art Deco bar with an open-air deck over the sea, signature cocktails, wines and single malts, a private lounge and DJs at weekends;
  • The Champagne Lounge — lounge off the lobby with floor-to-ceiling windows, champagne, afternoon tea with scones, single-origin coffee and live music on the red piano;
  • The Oberoi Patisserie — cakes, desserts, viennoiserie and breads, plus imported cheeses, cured meats and wines.
Swimming

There is no beach. The temperature-controlled outdoor pool, 18 m long, lies in a private courtyard and is open from sunrise to sunset, with loungers and tables where drinks and snacks are served during the day.
