About this hotel
General information
The Taj Mahal Palace occupies the Apollo Bunder waterfront in Colaba, directly across from the Gateway of India, with the harbour and the Arabian Sea spread out in front. The hotel has two parts: the historic Palace Wing, with its grand corridors, ballroom, gardens and art collection, and the Taj Mahal Tower, whose façade combines South Indian-style pillars, arched balconies recalling Rajasthan and a jagged crown above the upper floors.
Together they hold 555 keys — 243 rooms and 42 suites in the Palace Wing, 258 rooms and 12 suites in the Tower — and guests of both share the restaurants and bars, the J Wellness Circle spa and the outdoor pool. The hotel is known for its butlers and concierges, the daily afternoon tea at the Sea Lounge and its own art gallery in the Palace Wing; it runs on green energy and is EarthCheck certified.
Location
The hotel sits on Apollo Bunder in Colaba, in the south of Mumbai, on the harbour front opposite the Gateway of India. Mumbai airport is about 25 km away, roughly an hour by car; the hotel arranges airport transfers on request when flight details are sent at least 24 hours ahead. The concierge books hotel cars, taxis are easy to find at the door, and ferries from the Gateway of India take around an hour to reach Elephanta Island and its UNESCO-listed cave temples.
Spa
J Wellness Circle draws on Indian traditions of body care, and its Ayurveda Sanctuary is a separate space for Ayurvedic treatments. The menu includes an Indian aromatherapy massage with signature oils, a vigorous traditional Indian wrestlers' massage, a deep relaxing massage with hot herbal compresses, scrubs and wraps, a signature facial using natural hand-blended products, and a candle-lit four-hand aromatherapy ritual for two. Private yoga and meditation sessions are offered, and Taj Salon handles cuts, styling and treatments.
Sports & leisure
The outdoor pool is lined with private cabanas, the fitness centre is open around the clock, and morning yoga sessions take place by the pool. The hotel's historians lead heritage walks through the corridors of the Palace Wing, where the Taj Art Gallery stages changing solo and group exhibitions, and the Khazana boutique covers shopping. An electric carriage runs sightseeing rides past Mumbai's landmarks and old quarters, the Les Clefs d'Or concierges plan sightseeing and shopping itineraries, and in season there are speedboat outings and sunrise or sunset cruises across Mumbai Harbour. Evening entertainment is organised in-house.
For children
Babysitting is available on request.
