Wildflower Hall, An Oberoi Resort

About this hotel

General information

Wildflower Hall, An Oberoi Resort sits 2,515 m above sea level at Chharabra, high above Shimla, within 9.3 hectares of fragrant cedar forest on the Himalayan slopes. The main house of this former stately home keeps the mood of an old country estate – a firelit lounge, a well-stocked library, a snooker room and wood-panelled halls – surrounded by lawns, flower beds and rockeries.

Rooms and suites are furnished in a classic manner, with patterned fabrics, handwoven rugs, Victorian-style lamps and wooden ceiling fans, and their windows face the mountain ranges, the Shimla valley or the gardens. The grounds hold an indoor heated pool and an open-air infinity whirlpool, a spa whose treatment rooms are set out in the forest, a restaurant with a glass conservatory and terrace, and a fireside bar. All of the resort's electricity comes from hydroelectric power.

Location

The resort lies at Chharabra, 15 km from central Shimla, capital of the mountain state of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla railway station is 13 km away (about half an hour by road) and Shimla airport 31 km (roughly 1 hour 15 minutes). Chandigarh's international airport is 135 km away, a drive of 4.5–5 hours on roads that wind through cedar forests and around steep mountainsides.

Spa

The Oberoi Spa is reserved for resident guests, with treatment rooms scattered through the cedar forest around the house. The menu covers Eastern, Western and signature Oberoi massages, Oberoi experiences that combine several treatments, body scrubs and wraps, sensorial treatments to release tension, ILA facials and beauty salon services, and there is a steam room. The signature couples' ritual, Romance of Wildflower Hall, opens with a traditional foot ritual and continues with a full-body massage using aromatic attar oils and metal kasa bowls. Instructors lead private yoga sessions with breathing and meditation. The spa is open daily from 8 am to 7.30 pm, and treatments are best requested a day ahead.

Sports & leisure

The fitness centre, with cardio and weight machines, is open around the clock, and there is a tennis court, a billiards table, a card room and a library. The hotel arranges mountain biking with a professional guide – from forest paths to demanding off-road trails, with bike and protective gear provided – as well as treks, nature walks along the trails and private yoga for any age and level. Among its signature experiences are an Oberoi picnic hamper after a guided walk in the cedar forest or on a hilltop among 4 hectares of terraced apple orchards, a four-course dinner with paired wine in a hilltop gazebo cooked by a dedicated chef in front of the guests, a candlelit fireside dinner in an English-style drawing room, and dinner with a film of the guests' choice in the private in-house theatre, Periwinkle Hall.

Restaurants & bars

The Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as an all-day menu of Indian, Asian and Continental dishes, with tables in the main dining hall, in a glass conservatory and on a terrace facing the Himalayas, where traditional bonfires burn through the winter. The Cavalry Bar, with leather stools at the counter and silk sofas by the fireplace, pours single malts, cocktails, teas and coffees daily from noon to midnight. Tea is also served in the lobby lounge, and private meals can be set up on a room's own balcony.

Swimming

There is no beach. The temperature-controlled indoor pool, 17.97 m long, looks out to the mountains and is open from 7 am to 7 pm in summer and from 8 am to 6 pm in winter. Outdoors, a heated infinity whirlpool faces a wide sweep of Himalayan peaks.

Skiing

In winter the nearest ski area is Narkanda, a hill station 2,469 m above sea level among the Shivalik ranges, with slopes for both beginners and experienced skiers.

Pets

Pets are not permitted in guest rooms or public areas.
